Chadwell Heath v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 25 Jun 2016 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 59 runs
Match report
After last week’s last ball defeat to Stock, the 1’s made the trip to Chadwell Heath to face the league leaders.
Following the torrential rain and flooding in the area on Thursday, and with more rain forecast for Saturday combined with a series of low scores at St Chads Park, visiting skipper Wright won the toss and elected to field.
Early successes on a helpful surface soon followed, as both Wright and George Verlander made inroads into the home sides top order. Despite the dark clouds and thunder and lightning all around, the deluge of heavy rain was not forthcoming. Play however did continue through light/medium rain during the opening half of the Chadwell Heath innings. The 1’s opening pair bowled through, taking three wickets apiece as the home side were reduced to 48-6.
With the change bowlers of Tom Payne and Craig Marshall into the attack, rains got progressively harder, with gripping the ball and bowlers landing in their delivery stride made trickier. Reynolds survived a close lbw shout, before finally, play was halted in the 26th over at 2.40pm with the hosts 66-6, surely a good omen for the visitors.
Following a 50 minute break, the rain finally stopped and allowed the sun to take over. Tea was taken to enable the pitch to try and drain further. At 4.15pm, the game resumed with the overs reduced to 37 per side, effectively leaving the home side 11 more overs to post a total.
With runs difficult to come by, on an increasingly tricky surface, Craig Marshall removed dangerman Reynolds trying to engineer a scoring opportunity, 79-6. Denyer (14) was the other home batsman to make double figures, but as three figures were within reach, the wily Keith Mitchell combined with the sharp glovework of Andy Smith to take the three remaining wickets. Denyer, Brigdon and Miles all departed ‘stumped Smith bowled Mitchell’ as the innings closed on 95 all out.
In response, a good start was required. The home side, in search for wickets, went onto the attack and were rewarded in the first over as Rod Brazier was caught at short leg for two. Some counter attacking from Andy Smith soon took the total into double figures, but when he found Brigdon in the deep to depart for 11 it would have been difficult to foresee the drama that was to unfold in the remaining overs.
From 18-1, the visitors collapsed faster than the pound post Brexit, as a series of poor shots, decisions and a couple of smart catches saw the 1’s stumble from a steady start to an awful end, bundled out for a paltry 36, still 59 runs short of what was a meagre target in the first instance.
Whilst the pitch was undoubtedly providing assistance throughout and juiced up further by the heavy rain during the match, the run chase was poorly executed as the hosts bold decision to attack from the off paid dividends, well augmented with good bowling from Reynolds and Hurrell.
It must be said that credit should go to both sides for making every effort to play the match, despite the unseasonal conditions, particularly the sometimes heavy rain during part of the first innings.
Hopefully summer will return in time for next Saturday’s visit of Havering to Pheasant Park, which will hopefully get an opportunity to drain throughout the week having stood underwater following Thursdays storms.
