Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Broomfield on Sat 21 May 2016 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 8 wkts
Match report
After two narrow defeats in their opening matches, the 1’s made it third time lucky with a comprehensive victory over visitors Broomfield.
The home side made one change, with Tom Payne returning to the fold. After Broomfield skipper Farrow called incorrectly, they were asked to bat first.
Going was slow, as Kev Wright & George Verlander bowled accurately, Broomfield only into double figures in the eighth over. Something had to give, and the bowler’s patience was rewarded, as Turner provided George with a sharp return catch to depart for 7.
Farrow and Copeman dug in, but the scoreboard continued to tick over slowly, at a rate of fewer than 3 an over. The visitors were to suffer a double blow on 52, when both batsman were sent on their way back to the pavilion – Farrow (33) falling in the same manner as his opening partner, Tom Payne gleefully collecting the caught and bowled opportunity, whilst Keith Mitchell accounted for Copeman (9), clean bowling the visitors no 3.
Payne & Mitchell continued to apply pressure as wickets continued to fall in clusters, as 73-3 soon became 83-6. Some brief respite was offered by May, who counter-attacked well after earning an early reprieve. He and Cowell took the visitors into three figures, but once Roger Marshall flattened May’s off stump for an enterprising 37, it triggered another mini collapse, as a run-out and a first wicket for Craig Marshall took Broomfield from 119-6 to 119-9 – and on the brink. A final partnership of 7 took the visitors to a batting point, but Craig, in picking up his second wicket, the sixth to be clean bowled in the innings, closed the innings on 126.
A good first half and after tea, Rod Brazier & Andy Smith set about the target. They progressed quickly with 20 coming from the first 3 overs. Smith (12) was the first to fall to an excellent catch at short cover.
Rod & Manoj continued to tick off the runs, and whilst the rate had slowed from the opening exchanges, the pair put on 40 until Manoj (19) departed in similar fashion to Smith, also caught at short cover by albeit an even better catch. 60-2 from 15 overs.
In change bowlers Deacon and Cowell, the run-rate continued to slow, as Rod and new partner Ian Ball were exceptionally watchful, ensuring unlike the previous home game, that the opposition were not allowed back into the game.
Nevertheless, with few runs to get and plenty of overs to do so, patience was the key. Rod was rewarded with a second successive 50, as victory was brought closer into sight.
After seeing off Cowell for a hugely impressive spell of 10-7-9-0, figures that ‘brother’ Simon would have surely approved, scoring opportunities became more readily available as Brazier & Ball eased the hosts to victory, sealed by two successive boundaries from Ian confirming the win with 12 overs remaining, Rod undefeated on 63 and Ian 26, the pair putting on an unbroken stand of 69.
After two weeks of what should have been, it was good to get off and running with a first win back at this level.
Next, something of an unknown test at Noak Hill Taverners who themselves got their first victory of the season at the weekend with an impressive win against Chadwell Heath.
