Match report All good things come to those who wait – and a for the Thursday night over 40’s, victory has been a long time in coming.

Cruelly billed by the marketeers as a battle of the basement, Captain Ball sent West Bergholt into bat(tle), in the knowledge that their opponents had regularly struggled with willow in hand.

That attention to detail reaped reward, as West Bergholt were never really able to get going as the quartet of Mitchell, Woodrow, Strange and Collis sufficiently subdued the batsmen, restricting them to slightly under 9 an over – 86-3 - a very gettable total. Two wickets for the whirling Woodrow, whilst Richard Kneller rolled back the years in his side-on stumping of Parr.

In reply, Ball, reunited with his antique willow after its release from its temporary home in the ECCC Museum, played the anchor innings as ever with a serious of deft touches to wear the opponents in the field. Ably supported by Fantastic Flash the opening pair put on 50.

Their departures made, Ball safely in the hutch awaiting future deployment and Collis dismissed short of his ground, there may have been some cause for concern.

Such thoughts would have been nonsense, as the scampering Mitchell, together with the scything Strange brought the target within reach.

A sumptuous off drive for four from John was the coup de gras, sending the massed ranks in the Graham Gooch hospitality suite into raptures, victory by 5 wickets with four balls remaining.
