Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Little Baddow 2nd on Sat 03 May 2014 at 1.30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 72 runs

Match report The start of a new season, awash with optimism, an exciting new young team, all the ingredients for a bright new dawn. We will have to wait another week for dawn to break, as an experienced Little Baddow side triumphed by 72 runs.

Led ably by Connor Hayman, taking over skipper duties from the man in the sling, the new campaign begun well, with local rivals Little Baddow finding the going tough on an opening day Woodham wicket after being put into bat.

At 61-4, the first innings was in the balance - until a productive partnership of 75, by far the highest of the day between Marke (42) & Bowles (29), proved decisive. Both were removed by Keith Mitchell, who finished with 3-19. With a late wicket for Hayman, Little Baddow posted 157-8 from their 45 overs.

The reply started solidly against a bowling attack that was prepared to bowl wicket to wicket and build up pressure - which ultimately had the desire effect.

New opening pairing Ian Ball & Rod Brazier kept pace with the Baddow openers, as WMCC moved to 28-0 from 11 overs. Serene progress, and what transpired to be the highest partnership of the innings, but following the departure of Ball for 12, the wheels became slightly loose, though not quite ready to fall off. Yet.

Alex Brady on debut looked assured until he fell victim to an outstanding one handed catch by Marke, as he soon followed Brazier (18) back to the pavilion. When Josh Brady, still reeling from the facebook picture posted the day before chipped one to Moss for 0, WMCC had moved from 44-1 to 45-4.

A flurry of boundaries from Andy Smith showed promises of a fightback, but he, along with half the side - were undone by Julian, who produced many sticky moments (ask your folks) for the home batsmen, finishing on a startling 6-13 from 10.4 overs.

The innings closed on 85, some 72 runs short, with another 13 overs remaining.

A disappointing defeat, but one that was typical of an opening day game. The bowling and fielding were excellent, and will be a strong suit throughout the season. The batting was undone by some good old fashioned nous from the visitors, and more application will be needed in the weeks ahead to adjust from indoor cricket to the longer form of the game.

Mark it down as an opening day aberration - to be rectified next week at High Easter.
