Taunton Deane CC v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club TOUR XI on Sat 06 Sep 2014 at 1:00pm 40/40
Match was Drawn

Match report Its late so I may be brief!

Saturday arrived to full sunshine again and its now 3 tours and we haven't missed an over to rain. Must be some sort of record in September!

Taunton Deane were our opposition and their mid town ground was a picture. A beautiful flat hard lush out field and a batting track that made Rod's mouth water! The ground is regularly under water in the winter and in the floods 2 years ago water rose up to 1 meter, however the water has not damaged a lovely little ground.

Nigel Richardson took the helm today in his old home town and we once again allowed the home side to post a score. Connor and Manoj shared the opening spells with Connor picking up 2 wickets in a good tight spell on a lovely batting track. After his bowling performance yesterday Josh Brady was again thrown the ball in the 12 over and began a good spell of seam up bowling. He picks up the man of the Match award for his figures of 5 wickets for 29 runs off 7 overs. He threatened with every ball and maybe he will provide Kev with a new bowling option next year! Unless of course this is just a tour abberation!

The star of the Taunton Deane batting was a 14 year old batsman who played ever shot like a senior pro. He retired after reaching 50 off 50 and it was a pleasure to watch such fine stroke making in someone so young. If I had it on video I would make Angus watch it every night before bed! Harry Smith came back in after the fall of the 9th wicket and proceeded to race to a maiden 100, playing shots all around the ground. His second fifty came off 29 balls and he was warmly applauded by the Woodham team for his fine innings.

Josh and Craig cleaned up the tail and Taunton Deane finished on 258 for 9 off 40. Another good chase was needed.

Unfortunately our new found bowler, Josh Brady, failed with the bat today to a good low handed catch in the slips in the first over but Manoj and Rob kept the scoreboard ticking over in a 48 run partnership and keeping up with the rate. Rod eventually retired on 50 not out,(And thank you to Rod for that as he was not required to retire) after a typical tidy innings with 10 fours. If only he could bat on wickets like that everyweek!

Nelly Browny and Dave Glasson burned ever so briefly before getting out, George hit 18 with 2 fours and nigel didn't trouble the scorers on his return to Taunton Deane. So we were left needing just over 100 runs off 60 balls. Enter Connor Hayman and Stephen Richardson. with a partnership of 86 Connor and Stephen set about trying to win the game. No thoughts of the draw with Craig still to come in and Rod allowed to return to the crease. With 12 4's and a 6 between themm and 60 runs coming off the last 5 overs we eventually fell 19 runs short. It was great to see Connor hitting the ball so cleanly and Spuju bat like we all know he can.

Thank you to Taunton Deane for such a lovely day of cricket played in fine spirit. One to remember and we will surely be back next year.

Mark Beames and Matt Oliver umpired today whilst dreaming of having a go on the lovely batting track. Nick Goode and Olli Glasson scored with the professional Taunton scorer and Taunton provided a really lovely tea.

We all retired to the wonders of the Weatherspoon in town for a 'quiet' dinner.

I would also like to mention our team of professinal supporters who made the trip down to support the club this weekend, Gary and Debbie Verlander, Karen and Robbie Brady, Hannah Verlander and Chloe Brady, Their love of cricket, their kids, and woodham Mortimer knows no bounds!

Last game tomorrow versus Nelly's old club Bagborough and what a perfect time for his battng to shine! (no pressure then..)

Goodnight!
