Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SUNDAY XI v Great Waltham on Sun 03 Jun 2018 at 1.00PM
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts
Match report
After consecutive title winning seasons in the Division 2 Warsop Sunday League Woodham Mortimer hosted Great Waltham in their first ever division one match.
After losing the toss WMCC were put into the field to endure the combining wrath of the midday heat and the quality line-up possessed by Waltham. Yet, despite such quality it was WMCC that drew first blood with two quick wickets from Toby Pateman who removed both Bloom and Harris for small totals. Chipping in with a wicket of his own George Verlander also removed the remaining opener in Deverish, who although started well, struck a ball straight back at the bowler who managed to pluck it out of the air.
With the heat increasing and a chink in the Great Waltham armour showing a change of bowling took over from the road end. With the fantastic off-break of Olly Glasson combined with the spectacular leg-spin of WMCC veteran John ‘Doc’ Woodrow the middle order of Great Waltham gradually fell to pieces. Tanner, who looked to be in good nick, went after Olly Glasson but was caught on the boundary by a great catch by Dan Smith. Fitzwater struggled against the variations of Glasson and was given out LBW. De’ath perhaps received the ball of the day from Woodrow, in a delivery that pitched outside off-stump and spun in to hit leg. And the Read brothers quickly fell for the Doc’s spin soon after with amazing glove work from Andy Smithy who took a catch and a stumping off the vet’s bowling.
At drinks it was safe to say it was the host’s session. Yet, all was not lost for the away team.
Despite decent bowling from Gavin Cook and Dan Smith the last resistance in the Great Waltham line-up could not be breached. The father & son pair of Chapman soon accelerated, both scoring respectable totals into their 30’s until a return from Pateman and Verlander removed them, leaving the number 11 Taylor stranded not out. After such an abysmal collapse the away team had fought hard and reclaimed a respectable total, finishing on 155 off 32.1 overs.
With a brilliant tea provided by Nick Goode soon demolished by all Woodham Mortimer geared up to chase a very gettable total against a strong bowling unit. Glasson and Smith opened for the hosts, yet all did not start well when Andrew Smith was trapped LBW off the bowling of Fitzwater for 0. Olly Glasson was soon joined by Dan Smith who then began the comeback, the pair racing to 50 off the first ten overs. With a change of bowling came another wicket as Dan Smith chased a wide delivered and was caught off the bowling of Read. With many runs to go the in-form Jack Shipton was welcomed to the crease who continued to chip away at the total. Olly Glasson soon fell to a yorker from Deverish, leaving his father Dave to face the brunt of the pace bowler. Yet the quality of the young bowler proved too much this time, as Dave soon nicked one behind, instantly walking and showing how we do things here at Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club.
Pete Harness joined Shipton, and soon found himself facing the first free hit of the day which he dispatched out of the ground and into the road beyond for a massive six. The pair fought on hard, inching towards the total when Harness’s eyes lit up once again for the slog, yet this time safely caught by the hands of Deverish on the rope. Toby Pateman chipped in with a vital few runs until he was removed, with Skipper Verlander joining the fight who played the supporting role to Shipton, who had battled hard and stood his ground for a great innings of 47. With two runs to win Fitzwater returned to the attack but unfortunately skewered one down the leg-side for a wide which secured the match.
Woodham Mortimer CC victorious in the new Warsop Sunday League Division 1.
Thanks to all that attended to play against what was a quality Great Waltham side. When we play like this we can go up against anyone and hold our own. Many thanks to Nick for providing tea. We go against the Journeymen next week, so far unbeaten this season on a Sunday, and with our Warsop Sunday League streak once again unbeaten.
