Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v OSSCC on Sat 26 Aug 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 28 runs
Match report
Woodham hosted OSSCC on a a rather hot day towards the end of August, the away skipper correctly guessed heads at the toss and duly inserted his hosts. This was to prove a good decision from him. a good opening spell from Hayman and the younger Older only brought one wicket but kept the run rate in check with opener N. Pararajah showing a class above most of the opposing batsmen we have faced this year. The older Older picked up the wicked of number 3 Wilks which brought to the crease the power hitter C. Ashdown. This introduction meant an increase in the run rate with drinks being taken with the score at 108-3. thankfully the drinks break did the trick for the home team as Jack removed Ashton with the first ball after drinks, caught smartly behind the stumps by Fannon. 2 more quick wickets fell with P. Harness involved in both, firstly removing S. Sutherton for 0 stumped by Fannon and then catching C. Dove well at midwicket after the batsmen middled a full toss from J. Older low to his left. at this stage Woodham thought they were in the with a chance of bowling the opposition out. This unfortunately did not happen as the serine Pararajah continued to bat with assurance and some lower order power hitting from C. Sorrel (45) and J. Hinds (30) enabled the opener to reach a well deserved hundred, eventually falling for 119 after opening up and being bowled by J. Preston. OSSCC ending their innings on 262-8. Joel Older being the pick of the bowlers returning figures of 8-0-32-1 (maybe underused) and J. Preston bowling much better than his figures of 10-1-68-3 suggests.
A great tea was put on by the Ball entourage, in attendance to support their man of the day I. Ball who turned 50 today. Congrats chairMAN on reaching yet another landmark.
The Woodham openers entered of birthday boy Ball and Captain Brown entered the fray knowing that their normal turgid batting still wouldnt help in a chase of nearly 6 runs an over. Brown following on his good form from last week played shots from the off with Ball starting a little slower but accumulating nicely. The start was damped however when firstly Ball was bowled round his legs for 20 by C. Sorrell and then Brown falling on 31 to the same bowler being given LBW missing a long hop which hit him in the box and was probably going on to miss both off and leg stump. Hayman came and went quickly but this brought the experienced pairing of N. Richardson and D. Fannon together and this pair started the accumulation of runs again. With things ticking along nicely and N. Richardson reaching the 30's disaster appeared to strike as the a fore mentioned tweaked a Hamstring. This unfortunate set back seemed to help rather than hinder our resident Pastor as he quickly moved through the gears scoring 39 off his next 14 balls to pass his 50 in quick time. OSSCC rang the changes in the batting line up and it was the introduction of spin twins C. Dove and J. Stock who finally brought the partnership of 105 to an end. J. Stock having Fannon stumped for 39 with the batsmen seemingly forgetting he needed to get back into his crease. This partnership however brought Woodham to 182, needing only 80 runs from 15 overs the home side felt confident. This confidence was short lived as Cook, Harness and Goode were removed for a combined score of 1. 182-3 had become 211-7. Richardson, despite wickets tumbling continued to hit strong down the ground and brought up a century, a magnificent effort given his injury woes. He unfortunately fell shortly after holing out in the deep off J. Stock. With this wicket all hope of a Woodham win seemed to dissipate. A Partnership between the two Olders gave Woodham maximum batting points but the win was unfortunately out of our reach mainly due to J. Stock returning figures of 6.4-2-23-5.
A disappointing day all round with a lot of wayward bowling, sloppy fielding and a lower order collapse culminating in a loss for the first time in 4 matches. Any chance of catching Galleywood in 3rd being lost as they won away to Rayleigh which also means any chance of being caught for 4th place has also gone.
With Woodham now safely placed in 4th position with one final game to play a mix up of batting and bowling could be on the cards, however, with Boreham, Goresbrook, OSSCC and our hosts Wickham all in a relegation fight on the final day it may only be fair to all teams involved if we continue to play as we have all year. Votes welcome on the day of the game.
A Special mention must go out to our 1st team who secured promotion today with a close win over Springfield. With an Outside chance of finishing first next week it is all to play for, for them. Well done Kev and the team on an excellent season, lets both finish on a high with a double win and enjoy a night out afterwards.
