Hatfield Peverel v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI on Sat 27 May 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won By 6 wkts

Match report The Woodham Pups travelled to undefeated Hatfield Peverel looking to book back to back wins for the first time this season. The Woodham skipper once again chose the Queen and once again lost the toss however, with the Hatfield skipper choosing to bat the Woodies still got the desired outcome.

A first over maiden from S. Older was a good start for Woodham, this was bettered by J. Preston who followed with a wicket maiden, bowling opener L. Howe for 0 with one that straightened and nicked the top of middle. This brought home captain E. Moore to the crease who looked assured, this coupled with the big hitting of T. Lenoir soon put the Woodham bowlers under early pressure for the first time this season. This pressure was thankfully relieved slightly when E. Moore, trying to cut a delivery off J. Preston under edged to the grateful skipper who took a low catch to his left hand side. This wicket brought the well known R. Tripathi to the crease. Tripathi, looking solid and the free scoring Lenoir kept the scoreboard ticking along until change bowler G. Cook tempted Lenoir to hit over the top, unfortunately for Lenoir, who had already had one life after a difficult chance was dropped by J. Preston, found S. Older who made no mistake with the chance. With Lenoir falling for 42 and the pups tails up resistance from the home side was not forthcoming. Sharp chances off the bowling of C. Hayman were duly taken by Captain Brown at slip and N. Cook, (behind the stumps for the first time this season) brought about another 2 wickets to put Woodham in charge. With another wicket from G. Cook, a rare run from chairMan I. Ball and the inform S. Collis mopping up the tail and returning figures of 3.5-0-9-3 the Hatfield Innings came to a close on 108 of just 31.5 overs.

Another excellent bowling and fielding display from the pups who surely must be close to the leagues best in these departments brought about a early fine tea.

The 2nd Innings got underway with openers I. Ball and A. Brown discussing the need to stay steady and not give early wickets, unfortunately captain Brown did not pay attention to his own words, missing a straight one from R. Tripathi to depart for 2 in the 3rd over. This brought the returning N. Smith to the crease looking to follow last years good form, a year in which he averaged 75 for the 2nd team. Ball and Smith kept the scoreboard ticking over until Ball was adjudged LBW, a tight call, but as we all know the umpire is always right and the chairMAN took the decision with (cough cough) grace. Hayman was next to the crease and he put up a stubborn resistance eventually becoming the impressive C. Phillips 2nd wicket. with N. Cook falling to T. Phillips a Woodham collapse was on the cards. However, the with steady Smith and new Bat P. (trigger) Harness playing sensibly the Phillips brothers were seen off. A special mention to these bowlers who were a cut above anything else Hatfield could offer as the returned a combined 20-7-29-3. With these two bowling out Harness let loose, supported by Smith, Harness went on to make 45* an innings which include 7 fours and 1 six. Woodham winning the game by 6 wickets with 20 overs to spare.

A first away win for the Pups moves the Woodham 2's up to 3rd in the league, next up Burnham at home.
