Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Willow Herbs 2 on Sat 11 Jun 2016 at 1.00pm
Match was Abandoned
Match report
With the Woodham Pups returning from a difficult away trip to Burnham spirits were a still high and a quick warm up of high catching bringing optimism to the team. The Woodham Skipper again one the toss and inserted the visitors. This time catching from the team was excellent, with the exception of the first team player Mark Beames who shelled two. He was probably still pondering the thrashing England had just handed his beloved country in the Rugby.
A great opening spell and some fine slip catching brought Older 3 wickets and yielded few runs, this was supported well by a wayward Preston, Preston still finding the knack of picking up wickets however, returning with figures of 6-2-25-2. At this stage Woodham were well on top and this was going to be the theme of the day, as bowling changes were made with Tripathi and Coulson being brought into the attacked wickets and runs started to dry up, thanks mainly to the visiting captain P. Douglas who finished the innings 19* after about 33 overs. Woodham kept plugging away at him and the other end, Collis being particularly frustrated despite bowling a fine spell of 10-5-8-0. Tripathi managed to get in on the wicket taking action when the more aggressive Butcher lofted to catch to Preston in the deep, the 3rd chance he had offered and unlike the Overseas Pro Preston made no mistakes. This left S. Older to return, 3 overs remaining for him and 2 wickets needed for his first 5'er for Woodham. first over bowled, no wickets, however in the 2nd over he picked up the first with an easy catch being offered to P. Harness. as the last man walked out to the crease and the Woodham fielders circled Older ran in, bowled the ball and was presented with maybe the easiest Ct & Bowled chance he could wish for, he hang on and the 5'er was completed, Older finishing with 8.5-3-14-5. A great bowling performance from all and a much improved fielding display reducing the visitors to 96 all out.
After a marvellous tea, provided by Preston and the family the Woodham openers set about chasing the low target with one eye on the weather, Brown going out in uncharacteristic fashion and hitting two 4's of the first over, a slightly more sedate Smith still managing to accumulate the runs. Unfortunately the Woodham openers could not make enough of an impression on the score as the weather set in and the players departed the scene with the score 43-0 of 8.5 overs. Both teams were hopeful of returning to complete the game and much credit to the Willow Herbs players who seemed more determined than some of the Woodham players, (no names mentioned) but both teams set in to watch the Wales match. Well done Wales on a good win, we are coming for you Thursday. at the end of the match the captains, and a host of players went out to check on the pitch, this was deemed unplayable due to a puddle still on a length at one end and hands were shaken and a thoroughly enjoyable game was called to an end, Brown and Smith unbeaten son 22 and 21 respectively.
A disappointing end to a good game and a certain win for an improved Woodham side, although maybe less disappointing than the England match which followed. Well done Sam on your first 5'er for the club and onwards to OSSCC.
