Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Orsett & Thurrock2 on Sat 28 May 2016 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won 7 wkts

Match report On a somewhat overcast early afternoon the Woodham Pup's welcomed Orsett and Thurrock to Pheasent Park with last weeks chastening defeat still fresh in the mind but with a few older stages returning, most notably a first game of the season for "Grandmaster Flash" Steve Collis. Up went the toss and it fell kindly for the home captain who despite last weeks horrors of fielding first duly inserted the visitor's.

A fast start was hoped for and in the end that was what both teams got, Woodham claiming their first wicket when Jacks was trapped LBW by S. Older for a golden duck mid way through the first over. This however, brought Asim to the crease who took a liking to the Woodham opening pair of Older and J Preston. the big hitting number 3 had spread the field when one big shot too many rifled towards M. Beames who after juggling the ball not once, nor twice but three times finally held on with the help of his chest to send the aggressive Asim on his way for a quick fire 44. This proved to be the turning point in the game.

First change bowlers O. Glasson and S. Collis started to dry up the runs and then take wickets as the middle order of Orsett and Thurrock preceded to collapse much in the same way as Woodham had done a week before. The combination of spin and medium pace proving too difficult for the remaining batsmen with both bowlers finishing with nearly identical figures. Glasson 9 Overs 4 for 26 and Collis 9 overs 4 for 24. Woodham bowling the visitors out for 121.

A lovely tea was then had compliments for the Goode family and the Woodham batsmen discussed how to go about this score very similar to the Hatfield Peverel target which was not chased down. This time however there was no mistakes. The opening pair of Brown and Glasson started the chase very aggresively, especially Glasson. However, with the score approaching 30 Glasson chased a wide one and knocked behind. He knew he had left runs out in the middle and this proved to be the case as Brown was joined at the crease by Beames who through a mixture of good luck and good stroke play built a good partnership and passed the 100 mark. As the final score was approaching and skipper Brown eyeing up a 50 Orsett and Thurrock called for the previously destructive number 3 Asim, and with his first ball he managed to pick up the skipper for 48. this brought N Cook to the crease, with M Beames believing he was much close to the 50 mark than he actually was N Cook smashed 2 fours through the covers to move quickly to 10 and bring Woodham within one 1 of victory. Unfortantely in the next over Asim accounted for Cook as well bringing N Goode to the crease with 39.4 overs remaining to score the solitary run for victory. Much to the amazement of the watching woodham players Goode played out the rest of the over for a wicket maiden, this left Beames on strike to face new bowler Bundock, Beames, after watching the first ball, smashed the second down the ground to finish on 39 NO, bringing up the Woodham 125 and gaining a batting point.

A much improved performance all round with some good bowling and strong batting at the top order sets up an fascinating match next week away to Burnham who are only 3 points above the Woodies.
