Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Eastwood 1 on Sat 13 Aug 2016 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 45 runs
Match report
Fourth met second as the 1’s hosted Eastwood at Pheasant Park.
Upon winning the toss, home skipper Wright invited the visitors to bat first. That decision initially proved to be a chastening one, as the cavalier Pragash, who scored 100 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, began in aerial mode, riding his luck to a degree, scoring fours at will.
He passed 50 in the opening 10 overs, until finally he found a fielder, Rod Brazier taking the catch, George Verlander the wicket. GV did not have long to wait for a second wicket, Howe nicking to slip to depart for 6. 82-2. Respite proved brief as Morrant joined Byford to continue the boundary count on a good strip and quick outfield.
A change of ball, necessary after Morrant clubbed a huge six onto the road, appeared to have a positive effect for home side and they started to claw their way back into the game. Roger Marshall got one through the defences of Byford (44) and a bouncer to Morrant (36) produced a mis-timed hook which brother Craig did well to move from mid-wicket to catch. Craig soon claimed a wicket of his own, deceiving Fullarton (0) with a dipping low full-toss. 175-5, though with plenty of overs in hand, there was much work to do.
With visiting skipper Deeming at the crease, the prospect of a big score being posted remained. The visitors moved past 200 but the combination of ‘spin’ at one end and pace at the other started to take effect. Ian Ball safely pouched an edge from Deeming, the visiting skipper departing for 45, a third wicket for Roger.
From 210-6, the visitors were then swiftly dismissed, as three wickets for Keith Mitchell and a fourth for Roger effectively saw the last 5 wickets fall for 15 runs – Eastwood 225 all out, and possibly crucially, the home side claiming 4 additional overs, reward for dismissing Eastwood in 40.1 overs.
An opening stand of 37 at the required 4.5 an over provided a solid platform in the reply. However 37 without loss soon became 39-2 as Ian Ball (4) and Manoj Tripathi (1) fell in quick succession.
In form Toby Pateman joined the returning Rod Brazier to stabilise the hosts and batted sensibly, ticking over at the required rate and keeping plenty of wickets in hand.
Three short of his half-century, Rod departed, bowled for the first time this season for a run a ball 47. Toby shortly followed for 20 to leave the game in the balance – 104-4 from 23 overs.
Neil Cook and Roger Marshall combined well to get the run chase back on track, as the match continued to be finely poised. The pair took the score beyond 150, until Deeming returned to the attack and lured Cookie into playing a hook stroke that he succeeded only in skying to the ‘keeper.
The same short-pitched ploy worked again for the sixth wicket, as Gav Cook went in identical fashion to Neil. 174-6. 52 required from 11 overs.
In similar circumstances to the Eastwood innings, the lower order/tail failed to wag and despite enough overs in hand, once the score had reached the darts maximum of 180, the wheels well and truly came off, as Pragesh and Worrall claimed two wickets apiece to end the home side’s chase some 45 runs short.
A disappointing end to what had been a good contest throughout – the margin of defeat perhaps not reflecting the closeness of the game. We competed well against a good Eastwood side, who showed why they are likely to end the season with promotion.
Three matches to go, and a chance to consolidate fourth spot in the division, which would be an excellent return on promotion back to Div 3, as we go to bottom placed Stock next Saturday – a chance to avenge the surprise defeat earlier in the season.
