Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Springfield 3rd on Sat 15 Aug 2015 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 7 wkts
Match report
The 1’s made it a club record nine wins on the spin with a commanding 7 wicket victory over relegation haunted Springfield.
Winning the toss, the choice of home skipper Wright was vindicated early on as he removed opener Nice without score, George Verlander on hand to claim the catch after a juggle by Ian Ball at slip to keep the ball alive. The visitors were soon in big trouble as two wickets in an over from Connor Hayman, the second a fine judged catch from Keith Mitchell, left them at 9-3.
Visiting skipper Vince decided that counter attack was the best form of defence, as he and opener Cook dealt in boundaries with the field up, ready to pounce. Whilst Cook got a reprieve with the score on 36, the next ball Vince was not so fortunate succeeding only in lofting a Hayman delivery to grateful glovesman Andy Smith. Kennedy joined Cook and they developed the second highest partnership of the innings, but when the pair had reached 21, Kennedy was bowled by Wright for 13. When the new ball pairing had completed their respective 10 overs, the visitors found themselves at a perilous 69-5.
There was no let up with the change pairing of Tom Payne & Keith Mitchell, who gradually chipped away at the lower half of the Springfield order. Strangely, all of Payne’s dismissals were identical, as Nightingale, Pattison and Howell all chipped straight to Rod Brazier at point. In-between, Mitchell finally accounted for Cook for 31, well pouched by Ball, before clean bowling no 11 Aldworth to complete the innings, Springfield all out for 92 in just 30 overs.
After a Brazier tea, the team set about the victory target. With visiting opener Arain getting significant swing, the task was made more tricky, but nevertheless the Brazier/Smith combo was able to get the team a third of the way to the required score, until Smith lofted one to extra cover to depart for 19. Brazier soon followed, instead picking out Dance in the cover region, who claimed a catch at the second attempt. The 1’s 36-2 from 12 overs.
The steadying influence of Roger Marshall and Ian Ball helped to push the home side towards the small total, rotating the strike well and putting away the bad ball, and at the same time extinguishing any faint hopes that they visitors had of a batting collapse. The pair had looked set to take the hosts to victory, until an over exuberant Roger attempted a tight single, and was run out just short of his ground as he tried to return to the non-strikers end. Roger departed for 33, the top score of the day, as he had got the hosts closer to the winning line.
There were no further alarms as Ball and Neil Smith patiently ticked off the runs required, Nelly taking the hosts to victory with two successive fours, the target reached in a watchful 27.2 overs, with the game concluding shortly after 5pm.
An excellent 26 point haul, not always easy to achieve when fielding first. With OC’s losing their match at Thurrock, the 1’s now find themselves top of the table with two to play. Two wins would seal the title, whilst a maximum of 9 points are required to guarantee promotion.
One of the biggest challengers that could affect the promotion race are 3rd placed Chadwell Heath, who we entertain in our final home league game of the season at Pheasant Park.
A tough challenge ahead, but one we aim to meet. Until next Saturday!
