Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Little Baddow 2nd on Sat 18 Jul 2015 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 125 runs
Match report
Whilst England toiled away on a 'docile, batting track' at Lords, Woodham arrived at Pheasant park with the sun beating down on a pitch with a touch of grass that had batsmen and bowlers licking their lips in equal measure - and it proved conducive for good cricket with some turn, a lot of bounce and runs aplenty.
Visiting skipper Bowles won the toss and, following consultation with his team, decided to insert the Woodies - a bold move considering the recent form of the Woodham batting line up. However, the decision paid off. Stand-in skipper Brazier hit a full toss straight to mid-off, removed early on for 5. This brought Ian Ball to the crease. Back into the troublesome number 3 slot whilst Nellie found shade and solace in the changing room after a big night out with a certain Brown (A), Rod and Cookie the previous evening. Ball and Tripathi pushed the score along before both departed (Manoj for an excellent, swashbuckling 44), bringing the barely recovered Nellie Smith and Roger Marshall to the crease.
But oh what a partnership! This Woodham line up just doesn't know when to roll over and die. Wolves look after each other and two very sensible innings' from them gradually accumulated runs, setting up the game for the win. Marshall, who had been the anchor of the innings, batted responsibly before calling for a suicidal single. Nellie didn't/couldn't/wouldn't move, and Rog was out, stranded on 30. This brought Chris Roper to the crease, making his debut for the firsts after a late call-up, who carried on the attacking intent in true one-day style. Demonstrating an array of shots that many wicketkeeper/batsmen would be proud of, he flayed the bowlers to all ends of the ground in an effortless and impressive innings of 44*. In the meantime, Nellie racked up a fine half-century and took his total to 60, having used all of his guile and experience to coax his first 50 for three years out of a game that had threatened to go either way. The home side eventually amassing 259-7 from their 45 overs after Hayman, Verlander and Marshall (C) joined the party for some big hitting and hard running late on.
A Peggy tea was splendid, despite the seemingly endless deliberations, consultations and secret negotiations in the days prior and it sent the eleven wolves out sensing blood. Connor (3-15) bowled a devastating opening spell, possibly his quickest of the season whilst Tom Payne (2-23) was given the nod to open in the skipper's absence (albeit up the hill...obviously). He bowled the first two bouncers of his career, one of which actually made contact with an opposition batsman, drawing blood from the thumb, and the pair were nigh on unplayable as Woodham set increasingly aggressive, attacking fields in order to the wrap the game up. Craig found plenty of bounce from the pitch too, taking 2-41 before the straight lines of Verlander (barracked from the ever-growing, ever-rowdy crowd...who were these guys?!) set about signalling the end with a spell of 2-21. Roger was allowed his customary couple of overs towards the end of the innings and even had the rare treat of 6 slips, a gully and a leg slip as the skipper indulged. Almost every ball he bowled cut the Baddow final partnership in half, bruising Roper's hands in the process, before George sent an off stump cartwheeling to finish things off. Little Baddow bowled out for 134 in just over 34 overs.
A comprehensive victory and 26 points that went straight in our baskets.
