Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Thurrock 2nd on Sat 27 Jun 2015 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 10 wkts
Match report
A scintillating unbroken opening stand of 167 between Rod Brazier & Andy Smith was the undoubted highlight of a comprehensive 10 wicket victory at home to Thurrock at a sun-drenched Pheasant Park.
Inviting the opposition to have the first use of a firm but green track in hot conditions, Connor Hayman, battling up the hill and the previous nights excesses, struck early, getting one through the defences of opener Qureshi. Despite the odd boundary, the ball continued to beat the bat or find the edge with regularity - with nothing going to hand - as the WMCC opening bowling pair posed problems for the visitors. Finally, both were rewarded as the score passed 50, as both Hayman and Wright removed Qureshi (28) and Buckley (15)respectively, both nicking to glovesman Smith. The visitors 55-3 from 20 overs.
The returning Tom Payne made it look easy by claiming a wicket with his fourth ball, whilst a Craig Marshall delivery climbed too much for Day, who edged to slip, well taken by Graham Hirst. The visitors in trouble at 68-5. L. Henry (not that one) and D. Henry staged a minor recovery, until the former played across a straight one from Payne, departing for 29. Henry and Brooks continued to plug away, though the latter was fortunate to get a reprieve as the normally reliable Roger Marshall spilled a top edge, much to the chargin of brother Craig!
Marshall made amends when he entered the attack, claiming a brilliant return catch after Henry had drilled a straight drive in the air, as the visitors tried to get to 150. This they did achieve, but on the final ball of the innings, when the score had reached 164, Roger struck again, knocking back Brooks stump for 34.
An excellent bowling performance and a total that looked short of what was required. However, none of us were ready for what happened next.
The recently formed opening partnership of Brazier & Smith has already delivered success and this continued in some style. After a quiet start, the pair set to work on the visitors bowling attack, racing to 50 in 10 overs. At the 15 over drinks break, the score had accelerated to 84. The visitors chopped and changed the bowlers from the top end, but all went the same way, to the boundary, as the pair became increasingly expansive and brutal on anything short, wide, well, just anything at all, such was the good touch they were in. The three overs post drinks went for 39, including Smith smashing a George over for 16.
Smith was the first to pass 50, achieved at a run a ball, a feat soon to be earnt by Rod, at a much more pedestrian 60 balls. The 100 partnership was reached in over 17 as the victory target was being rapidly eroded. As the visitors visibly wilted, the pair continued the carnage. Fittingly, the match was won with a Smith cover drive for four - the victory target achieved with a staggering 21.5 overs remaining. Smithy unbeaten on 83, Rod on 77.
A brilliant complete performance, against one of our closest rivals in the league. The victory takes the team back into the top two at the halfway stage of the season. We hope to continue the momentum when we entertain near neighbours East Hanningfield at Pheasant Park next Saturday.
