Great Totham 2nd v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 30 May 2015 at 1.00pm

Match report
468 runs, four half centuries, including a fine unbeaten 66 from Connor Hayman, 15 wickets including a five wicket haul for Keith Mitchell, and a final over finish were amongst the highlights from an engaging and at times feisty encounter with Great Totham at the small but scenic Bull Meadow.
Asked to bat first, the first ball of the match provided the contest with its first talking point. With the ball taken at slip off the bat of Brazier, it appeared that Silcott had struck with his first ball. But batsman and umpires were unmoved, perceiving a bump ball. With no DRS in place, Brazier prevailed, much to the chagrin of the hosts. Nevertheless, they did not have that long to wait to claim their first wicket, Brady beaten by a full length inswinger from Wilkins for 5 - 22-1.
Brazier and Ian Ball doubled the tally before Rod picked out the boundary fielder to change bowler Pearson. 42-2 soon became 48-3 as Mark Beames was trapped in front for 4. Either side of the drinks break, Roger Marshall (10) and Ball (20) returned to the pavilion, both a touch unfortunate with their respective dismissals. The home side were on top at this stage, with WMCC 76-5 from 26 overs.
In stark contrast to last weeks display in the middle order, the response to the challenge was an excellent one. Skipper Wright and Hayman put together a 10 over partnership of 70, as the game swung back into the balance. The momentum was further continued as Andy Smith got in on the action, hitting a six which struck a passing car in a quick fire 24. Connor went on to complete a fantastic half-century, remaining undefeated with a superb 66 from 70 balls. Together with some late hitting from Craig Marshall (20 from 7 balls) the recovery was complete, maximum batting points secured and a decent target score set.
In reply, Wright trapped Chadwick in front to earn an early wicket. The fielding side thought it was soon two, as Barrat appeared to nick a delivery from Hayman to glovesman Smith. Whilst 'snicko' would have proved decisive, both batsman and umpire were unmoved as Barrat prevailed. He and opener Pearson continued to forge a strong partnership, finally halted as Pearson sought to further increase the run-rate, skying a Craig Marshall delivery to Brazier, departing for a solid 60.
Barrat continued to make a fluid half century, but the wily left arm of Keith Mitchell finally extracted the hosts no 3 - aided by a well taken catch from Tom Payne. Mitchell then presided over a tremendous 6 over spell which yielded a further four wickets, as the hosts moved from a position of strength to 193-7. This soon became 8 as Wright dismissed Wilkins. Nevertheless, whilst home skipper S Pearson remained at the crease, Great Totham always had a chance. Pearson passed 50, and in partnership with Kendall, halted the collapse and brought the victory target closer.
Pearson survived a tight run out decision in the penultimate over as tensions continued to mount with the winning post in sight for both sides. This left the equation simple for the final over, 3 runs to win. Two dot balls gave the visitors hope, but ball three was despatched for four by Kendall, advancing down the pitch to Mitchell to give the hosts a hard fought narrow victory.
As with last week, another close encounter, against a side that belied their position at the lower end of the table. A hard fought clash that could have gone either way.
Nevertheless, with results going favourably, we remain in 2nd, and will go again next week as we welcome Willow Herbs to Pheasant Park, seeking to get back on the winning trail.
