Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Old Chelmsfordians 2nd on Sat 23 May 2015 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 2 wkts

Match report A top of the table clash between old adversaries Old Chelmsfordians resulted in a tense climax with the visitors narrowly triumphing in a tight contest.

Batting first, free scoring was challenging against tight bowling and a surface that kept bowlers interested throughout. Three decent partnerships took the 1's to 85-3 from 30 overs, Josh Brady top scoring with 33, bowled just as he looked to hit the accelerator. The dismissal of Neil Smith for 24 signalled an unwelcome return of the mid-innings collapse as wickets fell on a regular basis - as efforts to accelerate the score failed to develop, the right balance of attack and defence not really met. When Tom Payne was run out, the innings concluded on 134 - from 41.2 overs.

Not as many runs scored as targeted, but as ever, the 1's bowling and fielding unit would always ensure that the visitors would have a fight on their hands. And so it proved. Connor Hayman was in devastating form, claiming four early wickets. With skipper Kev Wright picking up OC's skipper Ball, the visitors were rocking on 18-5. The experience of Cook and Bowerman brought much needed stability, and proved difficult to remove. The home sides cause was not helped with Tom injuring his arm in his first delivery and unable to bowl any further.

The visiting pair put on 61 before Roger Marshall trapped Cook in front, lbw for 29. Craig Marshall got in on the act, first removing Read and then Bowerman, who had just passed 50, OC's at this stage 107-8.

One more wicket to expose a young no 11 was the only thing that stood between WMCC & victory. However, Abbott and the experienced Hodges, patiently ticked off the runs required to lead the visitors to a tough two wicket victory.

A tight game as ever between the two sides. Ultimately not enough runs scored, despite a solid start. Something for the team to learn when setting a score. Nevertheless, we remain in 2nd position and look forward to a first foray for us all to Great Totham next Saturday.
