East Hanningfield & Great Burstead v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 02 May 2015 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 132 runs

Match report And so, we're back! The 2015 cricket season arrived in all its splendour, with the short trip to East Hanningfield. After being asked to bat on a good looking wicket, as firm as you are likely to see at this stage of the season, most of the Woodies could retire to the tremendous new pavilion to watch Rod Brazier and Josh Brady stride to the crease.

After negotiating the opening overs, with Stevens particularly getting some bounce, carry and swing, Rod became the first wicket to fall, caught by surprise by a low full toss which was returned to the bowler to clutch in his follow through. And so the theme was set for the first half of the innings, with small partnerships being patiently developed but ended just as they started to build. At drinks, called on the departure of Nelly for 22, the visitors were 62-4 from 22 overs.

What was in the drinks is yet to be confirmed, but the second half of the innings was much different. With the ball not doing as much and the opening bowlers bowled out or taking a breather, WMCC went on the counter attack. A quickfire 30 from skipper Wright in a partnership of 44 in 7 post drinks overs started proceedings, though the partnership of 76 between Roger Marshall and Connor Hayman ensured that the game continued to be taken away from the hosts. Both fell within sight of 200, Roger falling for an excellent 65 and Connor posting a rapid 26. Momentum was not lost as new batsman continued where those departing left off, particularly Craig Marshall who clubbed a speedy 18 to help propel the score to 221-8 at the innings close.

Would that be too much? The answer was soon yes, as Connor tore through the top order, breaking an off stump in his spell of 3-4 from 5 overs. Whilst opener Goody offered resistance, wickets at the other end continued to fall, as Craig Marshall, Tom Payne and Keith Mitchell all earnt their first wickets of the new season. When Goody departed for a battling 48 - safely pouched by Andy Smith behind the sticks, the game swiftly concluded, in slightly odd circumstances, with the home skipper attempting a suicidal run. Mitchell calmly removed the bails to complete the run out - and the 1's could bask in victory and return to the warmer climes of the pavilion.

A resounding opening day win, which should give the team huge confidence going into the next clash, as we entertain High Easter at Pheasant Park.
