Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Galleywood on Sat 16 Aug 2014 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 7 wkts
Match report
After two defeats on the spin, the 1's returned to winning ways with a resounding win against basement side Galleywood.
Winning the toss and electing to bat, the visitors found the wicket and the opening pairing of Connor Hayman and Tom Payne a challenge, enough to scramble the brain of opener Silk who decided to take a near suicidal run to skipper Wright, departing for 7.
Galleywood, looking understrength, knew that an innings from skipper Rowlands would be key. But when Hayman clean bowled him second ball, what was a challenging task became more of a mountain to climb.
Hayman also claimed the wicket for Norcombe (0), well caught by Andy Smith as the visitors looked in disarray 3 down and the score under 20.
G. Harrison (not that one)and opener Mower restored some respectability and began to develop the first partnership of note. Keith Mitchell, drafted in to break the partnership, instead soon had to retire hurt after just two overs. The last delivery of his second was driven hard by Harrison, initially clipping the fingers of Mitchell, before gliding off the top of his head, propelling the ball one bounce for four and effectively ending the Mayor of London's game for the day. Thankfully, despite some blood, he was given a clean bill of health by the medics. So much so, he returned after the game to deliver a 100 club draw (for July 2010).
In his absence, WMCC stepped up a gear, Wright removing Mower with an expertly taken catch from Payne. Wright then trapped Hayward lbw first ball. Whilst a hat-trick was not forthcoming, the pattern of the game very much had. Craig Marshall joined in the act, picking up three more wickets to add to an already impressive season haul, including the wicket of Harrison, who finally holed out to Payne for a battling 43. Hayman returned to take the final wicket, Galleywood all out for a flake, from 31 overs.
With the clock just gone 3, and the new Premier League football season only just underway, 15 overs of the reply were slotted in before tea. WMCC made good progress, and broke for tea with 40 on the board, with only the loss of Rod Brazier(4).
Stephen Richardson, looking in good form before the break, unfortunately fell straight after the sumptuous tea delivered by Tesco Tom (though it would appear he may have sub-contracted the job out) for 21. Neil Friend departed shortly after for 6, as the score moved to 53-3. But with Ian Ball playing a solid anchor role, joined by George Verlander, WMCC soon eased any fears of a classic collapse, gradually increasing 'WASP' back to its earlier high levels.
Verlander played an excellent hand, and as he had in the previous home match with Thurrock, top scored with an excellent unbeaten 33, deservedly stroking the winning runs as Woodies won with nearly 25 overs to spare.
It was good to get back on the winning track and with a maximum points haul, taking the side back up to 4th, just a point behind 3rd, currently occupied by next weeks opponents, Purleigh.
