Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Willow Herbs on Sat 19 Jul 2014 at 1.30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 3 wkts
Match report
Phew, what a scorcher! And what a nailbiting game too, as the 1's narrowly edged out visitors Willow Herbs to earn another excellent victory.
After the overnight storms had spiced the wicket up, the decision to bowl upon winning the toss was a tight call. However with Connor Hayman and Tom Payne tieing the opposition up from the off, the decision appeared to be justified.
Sharp catches from Kev Wright and Josh Brady, coupled with easier ones for Craig Marshall and Hayman had the Herbs in trouble at 33-4. Some counter attacking from Barker and Harris brought some respectability to the score, but once Harris nicked behind, Barker was left to farm the strike and try and set some kind of score to defend. He moved to 50, but ran out of partners, before holing out himself to a fine catch from Keith Mitchell at long off. The remaining wickets were eventually claimed, as the wicket haul was shared between the bowlers, plus a smart run out from Marshall. Herbs all out for 119.
Despite the early loss of Rod Brazier (3) and Josh Brady (22), progress to the target was fairly serene, as Stephen Richardson and Neil Smith put on a stand of over 50. However, once Richardson was trapped in front for 39, a mini collapse occurred as WMCC went from 83-2 to 106-7 in a 10 over spell. With the visitors suddenly sensing a chance to claw victory from the jaws of defeat, they went on the attack. Thankfully, a man used to many a drama, resident thespian Neil Smith, eased any fears of a narrow defeat and kept a cool head as others wilted under the heat and pressure.
He finally found a willing partner in Marshall and between them, they steered the home side to a victory that certainly the performance in the field had merited. Victory by 3 wickets and consolidation in 2nd spot.
A tighter game than it really needed to be, but again, for the second week running the team were able to do what was needed to achieve victory. After all of that drama, the 1's will now have a week off to recharge the batteries, all ready for the excitement of the final month and who knows, earn that second promotion spot.
