Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Purleigh on Sat 21 Jun 2014 at 1.30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 74 runs
Match report
In the first of the local derbies in Division 4 this year, the bragging rights in the pubs and shops went to visitors Purleigh.
On a warm day on a firm wicket, the toss was won by Purleigh who sensibly elected to bat.
An early breakthrough from the returning Connor Hayman, pouched by the long lost Woodham son Stephen Richardson, gave the home side early cheer. Opening partner Freegaard used a live when dropped at slip on 4, but that proved not to be too costly a drop as Tom Payne trapped the opener in front for 17. Gradually, partnerships were built, as Bowles (73), Rynn (23) and Stanley (49*) generated a solid mid order foundation to the visitors total. Bowles was dropped early on in his innings, as was Stanley, misses which WMCC were ultimately to pay for.
Nevertheless, a target of 224 on a decent strip with a quick outfield was not necessarily the tallest of tasks. Challenging, but far from impossible. However, the current frailty of the team in successfully chasing down decent totals reared its head again, despite another solid start to the reply.
This time, the opening partnership of Rod Brazier and Josh Brady provided the good base to the innings, with Brady well set until Cheek got one through his defences, 4 shy of what would have been an excellent and deserved half-century. Brazier and Richardson continued the good work, taking the home total past the 100 mark, not long after the halfway point. However, between overs 26 and 28, the reply crumbled, as Richardson (19), Brazier (31) and Andy Smith (0) returned to the pavilion. 101-1 had become 101-4 in the blink of an eye.
Despite a partnership of 28 between Neil Friend and Hayman, wickets kept falling at a regular rate, with pace off the ball in the shape of leg-spinner Oliver and Freegaard doing the trick for the mid to lower order, much as paceman Cheek (3-39) had done to the top of the order.
By the time Keith Mitchell performed a late cut - so late he knocked all three stumps down, WMCC were well short of the target, finishing on 149 all out.
Not a disaster by any means, but lessons need to be learnt on how to chase down reasonable target scores set. If key catches had have been taken, the chase could have been an even more manageable one, but on some days it does not go for you. Plenty of time to put things right across the rest of the season.
The defeat leaves the 1's in 5th place, nicely tucked in behind the leading bunch and well within strike of the top two. In Div 4, positions have changed places with regularity as teams continue to beat each other. The exception to that rule have been leaders Goresbrook, the next challenge for the 1's to face next Saturday.
