Thurrock 2nd v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 31 May 2014 at 1.30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 1 wkt
Match report
With the backdrop of downtown Grays, a thrilling finish ensued as the 1's went down by 1 wicket to hosts Thurrock.
Ultimately, it was the excellence of the bowling and fielding unit, plus the innings from Rod Brazier which ensured that the game had its dramatic conclusion.
Asked to bat first, Woodies made serene progress to 45 without loss from the first 15 overs. Then, as over 16 was entered, the wheel nuts were jolted, and quite quickly, from a position of strength, all the wheels fell off - a collapse of recent England or Sri Lanka proportions.
As well as openers Madder and George bowled, it was change bowlers Gelder and Quereshi who did the damage - though to be honest, the batsman were the architects of their own downfall. It was telling perhaps, that 8 of the dismissals were caught, with only one caught at the wicket.
Rod Brazier continued his consistent run, with what turned out to be easily the highest score of the day, 38, but with only Connor Hayman (10) and Eddie Extra (11) making double figures, the Woodham total spluttered to a flake - 99 all out from 41 overs.
Thankfully, the teams strength came to the fore in the second half of the game, to give the hosts a real fright. Excellent opening spells from Hayman and George Verlander were rewarded with a wicket apiece. Ably supported by change bowlers Keith Mitchell and Craig Marshall, wickets steadily tumbled - but the crucial one, of the powerful McCartney, brilliantly caught at slip by Nick Goode off Marshall, left the hosts 6 down, still needing 15 to win.
Hayman re-entered the fray and bowled Madder first ball. With 7 to win, Gelder suffered the same fate. 2 to win, George was clean bowled by Hayman again. As the game hung in the balance, final man Hills, who picked up a knee injury earlier in the game came to the crease. A swipe across the line brought him the 2 runs needed, Thurrock winners by the narrowest of margins.
A tremendously close finish, but realistically, we cannot expect to win many games posting a sub 100 total. It does demonstrate what a strong bowling and fielding unit that we have, capable of putting any side under pressure, but we will need to post more on the board to convert that pressure into wins.
Will hopefully get that process underway with a return to home action against Old Chelmfordians next Sat.
