Ventnor CC v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club TOUR XI on Sun 08 Sep 2013 at 1pm

Match report Day 3 of the tour and again it looked like rain threatened to ruin the day. We arrived at Ventor to find a lovely club house, a covered wicket, and a square sitting at the bottom of what can only be described as a bowl! The boundary in places was a full 10 meters higher that the wicket! And I am not kidding. A very famous slope we were to discover. Sometimes if the ball didnt make the boundary it turned and ran back down the hill!
We only lost 10 min of play due to rain and with the covers Ventor had a lovely batting wicket. Ventnor won the toss and of course decided to bat on their home ground. Josh Brady in his first spell of seam bowling took 2 wickets for 27 off 8 overs, backed up by George, and Kev. We took wickets regularly and only the 2 star batsman in the Ventnor side got well deserved 50's. Ventnor finshed on 198 for 9 off their 40 overs. An achievable chase we thought.
After an opening partnership of 52 for the first wicket and then Josh and Andy falling cheaply we were a little behind the rate. Mark Beames and Manoj Tripathi took up the chase and put on 74 runs in 84 balls, getting us back in the game with batting to come. Beames almost ran out Manoj a number of times in their partnership!
Neil Smith kept things moving wiht a quick 27 but with wickets continuing to fall Kev and George were left with the task of scoring 12 off the last 2 overs without getting out to at least salvage the draw. Kev saw off the last few pretty fast balls and the game was drawn. Woodham suviving by 1 wicket and Ventnor suviving by 2 runs. A wonderful game of cricket, a wonderful ground and very gracious hosts and we will all look forward to a return fixture one day.
