Match report The old adage that catches win matches was never more apt as half a dozen chances went begging as the 1's went down to defeat by 45 runs in the crunch match at relegation rivals Galleywood.

With background noise being provided by the V Festival, pace and swing were headline acts, as the outside edge of the bat was beaten with regularity. Wickets took their time to fall, but the scoring rate was kept in check until the arrival of Bennett, who counter attacked well, hitting the ball hard and cleanly. What a difference it would have made had the skipper held onto a chance when the Galleywood no 5 was on around 30 - a miss that would cost around 100 runs as Bennett continued to accelerate into three figures, finishing on 127 no - Galleywood setting a challenging 259 to win.

As with many run chases, WMCC were up with the rate from the start, but lost wickets at regular intervals which served to check progress. Rod Brazier finally got beyond the 50 mark, with an excellent 54, and Neil Smith (37) and Andrew Brown (31) the other main contributions, but without someone emulating the feats of the home centurion, the run chase ended 45 runs short of the target.

A disappointing defeat, but the margin not a true reflection of the close nature of the game. As with so many matches throughout the season, lots of 'if only' moments to muse over, the margin between winning & losing such a fine one in this league. The defeat widens the gap between the two teams fighting over the remaining relegation spot to 26 points, a challenging, but not insurmountable gap to bridge with two games remaining. Who's up for the great escape?
