Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 90 runs

Match report It may have taken a long time in coming, but finally the 1's are off the mark winning for the first time by chalking up a resounding 90 run win over near table rivals Southend.

Inserted into bat, Matt Goodlad and Rod Brazier provided the ideal platform, putting on a seasons best opening partnership of 81, Matt looking in particularly good form, as he became the first 1's player to pass 50 this season. Despite the losses of the opening pair, momentum was retained as Stephen Richardson took over from where Matt left off, regularly finding the boundary. With the middle order playing around Stephen, the run rate climbed and a target of around 200 looked in sight with 192 on the board with 3 overs to go. A tremendous flurry of runs, 38 from the final 18 balls of the innings propelled the score to 230-9, Richardson departing in the final over for an excellent 73.

The Southend reply was not allowed to gain any early momentum, as Hayman & Payne restricted runs and took early wickets. Indeed four of the seven overs from Connor's opening spell were maidens and included the first wicket to fall. Surprising, but welcome athleticism from Goodlad & Payne accounted for the next three batsman as the first four wickets fell for 32. Despite a flurry from Johnson (35) including 20 from Wright's first over, and visiting skipper Bunce achieving the third half century of the day, WMCC kept taking regular wickets, eventually halting the chase some way short of the target.

An excellent and comprehensive win, which has been coming for a few weeks. The win pulls us just 6 points away from safety behind Galleywood. Now to continue that momentum at home to Broomfield next Sat.
