Match report A much more positive showing, demonstrating that the 1's are moving in the right direction. Ultimately a 35 run defeat, but a game that was for the large part a very even contest. A solid middle order showing from the home side, plus a late flurry from no 9 Patel propelled the Rainham total just beyond 200. If a couple of chances had gone to hand, that chasing target could well have sat around an even more chaseable 175. Nevertheless of the three catches taken, all curiously fell to Andy Smith, who enjoyed a productive afternoon in the outfield, with the gloves handed to 16 year old Josh Brady, who kept superbly throughout.

In the reply, good partnerships were forged (40)Goodlad & Brazier, (55)Brazier & Mason,(38)Mason & Smith ensuring a solid and positive reply to the home sides set target. Rod Brazier almost made a maiden 50 for the club, and would surely have done so had he not picked the longest boundary, more MCG in dimension than local cricket to go from 46-49 rather than 50 before being stumped next ball.

Trevor Mason had also looked set for 50 but got a faint edge to the 'keeper and departed for 39. With established men in, the target of 70 from 10 on a large outfield may have been achievable, but wickets continued to fall as new men had no time to play themselves in. The dismissal of Smith (26), combined with some useful death bowling from the home side, saw the run chase fizzle with 4 overs to go, much to the relief of Rainham who knew they had been in a game.

Plenty of positives to be derived from the match, as we look forward to hosting leaders Springfield at Pheasant Park on June 1.
