Match report The wave of optimism of the new season was temporarily halted by a 5 wicket defeat at Southend & EMT.

True to form in the last three encounters by the sea, the winners of the toss elected to field first, and went on to win the game, chasing the seemingly winning formula.

After a largely untroubled start to the innings, the departure of Matt Goodlad (15) to an early season 'grubber' and debutant Rod Brazier (13) led to a mid innings collapse, typical of a first competitive match of a new season, in which many players were still reacquainting themselves with kit and bats alike. From a healthy position of 60-1, this soon became 67-6 as rustiness prevailed, though one of the men to go, Martin Coulson, had looked set to advance comfortably to 50, but was undone for 31. Kev Wright & Ollie Glasson managed to claw the score up to 100 until the light drizzle became too heavy and eventually determined an early tea and a reduction in over numbers.

Momentum lost, Wright(24) departed straight after the resumption, but the tail wagged to ensure that there was something to bowl at as the clouds dispersed and the sun returned.

Despite an early wicket, the drop of opener Wiggins proved to be expensive. WMCC made Southend work hard for their victory, and a couple more early wickets could have proved decisive. Wiggins (49) and Maher (51) applied themselves well & tipped the game further into the home sides favour. Following their dismissals, a further two followed, as Southend eked over the line, leading WMCC to think what might have been.

Nevertheless, a typically early season type performance, but as the saying goes, form is temporary. We should hopefully see the class return when Eastwood visit Pheasant Park on Saturday.
