Ryde CC v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club TOUR XI on Sun 09 Sep 2012 at 1:00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 5 wkts
Match report
After the first loss and then the draw, confidence was actually quite high and the squad was looking forward to what we thought would be the toughest fixture at Ryde CC. The cab driver took our bet of double the return fare for a loss, free return for a win, and Mark Beames matched that with a promise to pay the full fare for a draw.
We arrived at Ryde to find a 'proper' cricket club; fantastic facilities, an outfield like glass and a flat hard square that looked like it would be tough to bowl on. Stuart Careless was foaming at the mouth at the sight of a proper scorers box!
Peggy and Stuart were rested for this fixture and captain Reddin loss the toss for the third time and, of course, Ryde batted. We knew there were runs to be scored on this wicket so we set about trying to bowl a good line and length backed up by some great fielding.
It has to be said that all eleven players really showed up in those first 15 overs, Roger Marshall, (11 overs 47 for 1) and Liam Watts, (8 overs 52 for 2) bowled a really great opening spell and we took 3 big big wickets for 63 off the first 90.
Then Ryde,s yound Aussie batsmen started to take to our bowling, hitting the ball extremely hard and racing into the 90's when Craig Marshall had him trapped plum in front on 96. Umpire Peggy Mitchell giving a couragous but correct decision. The score was 170 for 4. With what we feared were some big hitters to come we continued to bowl and field very well and kept the run rate below 6 for the last 8 overs with Ryde finishing on 218 for 7.
Even though we dropped 6 catches (no sitters, all extremely tough chances) we all felt we had done the job required in the field and confidence was high for the chase.
Craig Marshall was the pick of the bowlers. He bowled in the last spell, really mixing it up and keeping the run rate down by taking 4 wickets for 52 runs off 8 overs.
The captain opened with Craig and we lost 3 early wickets with the score on 35 in the 13th over. Geoff did his old trick of pulling a hamstring and had to retire on 17 ( the second time Mark Beames has done this to him!) However Geoff had managed to face 74 balls for that 17 runs, bolstering the innings!!
There was some nervousness in the ranks but we still felt we had some batting to come.
And bat we did.....
Mark Beames tamed the Ryde off spinner with a quick 40 off 32 balls. finally falling to another attempted slog sweep. that brought Peter Kettley to the crease to partner Stephen Richardson. Peter proceeded to play the innings of the Tour, scoring 78 off 45 balls ably backed up by Stephen with 46 off 41 balls. Peter and Stephen saw us home in the 36 over with 8 balls to spare. The only blemish was Peter hogging the strike and leaving Stephen stranded on 46!
Final score 222 for 5. A fantastic win for the touring Woodies against a class side and probably the best all round performance of the tour.
Many thanks must go to Ryde CC for a great game of cricket, a wonderful tea and a fantastic BBQ following the game.
Man of the Match : Peter Kettley for his great runs
Notes: Captain Reddin and Wicket Keeper N. Collins.
Neil let 5 byes through.
