Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SUNDAY XI v Leyton Orient on Sun 28 Apr 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts
Match report
The second Sunday game was played in good spirits on very cold day with match paused twice due to rain. Thanks to Nigel for providing the teas and Nick keeping things in order in the club house. Thanks to Stu Careless for scoring and has to be said is as immaculate as it can possibly be done. Ollie Glasson is out of action for 6 weeks so wish him speedy recovery. Thanks for all players and the audience that includes Peggy.
Leyton Orient is a great team to play against and it’s also the team where Nigel has played. Nigel Costin provided me the insider information to field first as they have some good batsman.
As usual I won the toss and elected to field with the bowling trusted in the hands of George from the top end and Jack P from the bottom end. Jack didn’t disappoint and got Murali LBW so 22 for 1. No further damage was done as George completed 7 overs and JP 6 overs in their first spell. I hope they have got some overs under belt putting them in good stead when they play their first league match in couple of weeks’ time. A warning has been issued to Portugal where George is visiting.
Next the bowling was handed over to Toby P and Gav so that they can have some practice for the league match this Saturday. Gav got Minkes out for a well-crafted high full toss just enough not to be called a no ball and Toby took a blinder catch running backwards, we were never in doubt. Gav got one more wicket, bowled around the leg and Toby was able to get a wicket too. Both completed the spell putting woodham in good strong position. Dan was able to grab a stunner in slip hope this continues in league matches too.
Steve and Chris Collis dad and son with audience of wifey and daughter were next put to task. Chris finished with 1 wicket and Steve with 2 wickets. Josh after bowling well in the club match at death was entrusted the death overs 36, 38 and 40. Josh finished 1 for 15 with 2 chances dropped, you can’t make the skip any happier, well done. However Josh not helping JP with the saw dust was not nice but we only saw the humour side of it.
So 172 for 8 was the score and I thought it was at least 30 short of par on the slow and variable bounce wicket.
WMCC inning had usual ups and down. Dan at the top scoring 50 retired not out. Chris scored rapidly and missed one straight one for 14. WMCC had a bit of collapse and we lost 4 wickets in quick succession. Josh, you can be stumped off a wide ball, it’s not a dead ball, now you know for future.
Yours truly and Gav batted to take team home with Dan worried that he may have to come back. We were never in doubt with Geoff Boycott (George) and Derek Underwood (Steve C) yet to bat, so Dan can have shower change and enjoy his beer.
Next Sunday a struggle on availability and likely a weak team.
