Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SUNDAY XI v Tillingham on Sat 20 Apr 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 65 runs
Match report
Saturday Home game against our Tillingham friends match report -
It will be right to thank George to have led the Sunday team with great success in past years. Thanks to Nathan for providing a great pitch and Nick for keeping the club house in good order with new processes around bar, post-match clear up and match fees collection. Sam the tea was great.
It was a surprise not to see the usual suspects on a Sunday game. We had to go without incumbent Sunday batsman Shippo and the Sunday bowler Tobs. I hope Mickles finds his whites and the route to WMCC soon. Peggy dropped himself out due to back problem, not sure what he has been doing.
WMCC won the toss and asked Tillingham boys to bowl first. The scoring duties accepted by Gav as I and Nigel walked in umpire suits to the lovely square that we all love.
The opening pair Steve and Dan ready to face the first ball of the season. First few overs both Dan and Steve were ultra-conscious due to variable bounce on the pitch. It didn’t last long as we saw some good strokes from both along the ground drives and lofted shots. Dan retired at 50 and Steve was joined by our Australian pro.
Mark tried to impress Angus with few defensive shots which didn’t last long and he went back to what he does best slog over mid-wicket. Steve went back to test match mode to get as much bat as possible in preparation for his forthcoming season with Birmingham bears. Finally Steve retired at 51.
Angus joined his dad, this was planned by the skip to enjoy the banter between the 2. It turned out not to be a good idea as Angus unknowingly copied Mark’s technique. This led to his downfall and subsequently mark fell too few runs short of 50.
The batting from WMCC continued and posted a score of 219 which I thought was about par on the slow / low bounce wicket.
A very good effort in bowling from WMCC boys, Sam Older and Angus 3 wickets each and Sam Noman 2 wickets .Tllingham was bowled out for 154 in 39 overs. Gav was wicket less but bowled really well, no short balls and only couple of full tosses which were duly put away. Glen not out 57 was the only notable batting performance.
We were able to hold some catches Mark 2, Stevie wonder 1, Costin 1 and Sam Norman 1 (This was the best one). I won’t name and shame but Angus mentioned about a disgusting misfield. I won’t name the person but 2 catches in covers were dropped by our best fielder, I will keep an eye in coming matches. Yours truly I surprised myself with a direct 50 yards throw for a run out, first wicket of the season which is unlikely to happen again.
Costin had a hard time diving on leg side, my guess is he is still in bed. So it’s a request to all to try to bowl at least 2 bowls each over on off side please.
It was great to see contribution from all and hope you got what you wanted whether it was fun or some practice before the league season. Please feel free to advise me how we can change things to the benefit of all.
Until next week good bye!
