Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Rayleigh Fairview 2nd on Sat 07 Jul 2018 at 1:00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts
Match report
With All eyes on a World cup final in the afternoon the Woodies hosted Rayleigh Fairview with start time moved to the ungodly hour of 9.30am. Captain Brown won the toss again and elected to bowl first.
With normal opening bowler Older away for the week a change of opening partner and of ends for J. Preston didnt seem to effect him as he picked up the early wicket J. Faires with a sharp caught and bowled chance. This brought about a flurry of wickets as A. Faires, who looked capable ran himself out, taken on the arm of Fannon from slip after Brown had kicked away the ball from second slip. Fannon's throw was accurate and Costin completed the run out. Sarthi was next out trying to hit K. Mitchell out of the ground first ball of his spell and instead was bowled. C. Lockett then got in on the action bowling Webster for 0. Drinks was taken with the visitors 54-4 and the home side looking to finish the innings early with eyes on being completed for the England game at 3. Wickets continued to fall after drinks as G. Cook picked up his first wicket, bowling T. Nicholls and K. Mitchell found the back of Turner's bat which deflected the ball to Fannon who made no mistake at slip. This wicket was the last of the Game for Mitchell who bowled consistently well throughout and ended with figures of 10-5-16-2. Opener Madhun finally fell, bowled G. Cook for 25, Cook then picking up his 3rd a few overs later and Rayleigh were 106-8 and an early finish looked likely. Unfortunately for the home side the wheels started to fall of a little as a solid partnership between Webster and Turner turned the tide towards the visitors. this partnership put on 65 before the returning Preston bowled Turner for a well made 41, thankfully Woodham didnt have to wait long for the final wicket as Preston picked it up in the same over bowling number 11 D. Nicholls for a duck. Rayleigh finished on 171 all out from 40.4 overs and the time clocked at a little after 12.
A quick Jack Preston made lunch was taken knowing a quick turnaround was required to ensure the game was completed before the all important time of 3pm.
The Woodham Openers clearly had an eye on the time at the start of the innings as the normally slow scoring Brown decided to open up early, Fannon, the usual aggressor in this opening partnership was left to ride his luck at the start as he found himself on 7 after 4 balls but had been dropped twice in the process. Brown took this as his cue to put his foot down as the 50 partnership was brought up in the 8th over with both batsmen taking a liking to the unfortunate Turner who ended with figures of 5-0-45-0 although things could have been much better for the opener if he hadn't had 3 drops off his bowling. It was the introduction of Sarthi which finally broke the partnership, Brown trying to drive a ball which bounced a bit more and skying it to Gully for 34. This brought O. Glasson to the crease who continued in the attacking style of the openers and compiled a quick 22 of only 16 balls before becoming 1 of 4 batsmen to be bowled by Sarthi who completed a fiver on the day. Next in was Costin, who has been struggling for form this year but it was Fannon who was the next to fall for 38. Costin was Joined by Mickley but unfortunately this partnership didnt last long as Costin departed just before drinks for a run a ball 17. Preston continued the aggressive batting when he came in at number 6 taking 3 balls to get his eye in then scoring 4,4,6 in consecutive deliveries to take the game further away from Rayleigh, unfortunately he was dismissed the next ball for 15 off a very entertaining 7 balls. Kieth Mitchell Joined Mickley who was scoring his own runs quickly too before being unfortunate to be undone by a ball which kept low as he was looking to pull. Mickley's 15 at a strike rate of 68 was actually the slowest today. This wicket brought the lower order hero's of last week back to the crease together as Cook joined Mitchell with 23 runs required and still 17 overs to get them. Thankfully all 17 overs were not required as the pair completed the run chase in the 32nd over as Cook, with the scores level crashed a boundary to take the score to 175 and gain an extra batting point.
This aggressive batting display meant that the game was completed at 2.30, just in time to enjoy a couple of cold beers and cool down from the hot afternoon sun before settling in to watch an England victory with the returning and also triumphant first team.
Well done boys on a good team win, next up Galleywood who are 1 place and 10 points above the Woodies in the race for 2nd.
I hope you all enjoy the next game on Wednesday, i am just off to eat a bucket of Vindaloo which will definitely put my world in motion. P.S. IT'S COMING HOOOOOOOME
