OSSCC v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI on Sat 02 Jun 2018 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts

Match report Oh we do like to be beside the seaside... The Woodham train rolled into Southend this week with table topping hosts missing their two main batsmen. Armed with this information and looking at a greenish pitch the Skipper Brown decided to bowl first, even though he was the only member of the visiting team to have arrived. Fearing that Keeper Fannon was not going to make it on time Chairman Ball rather hopefully donned the outfit in the hopes of fulfilling a life long dream of keeping in an outdoor match for the first time. Alas for Ball it was not to be as Fannon turned up in the nick of time.

Unfortunately, for opener Older it may have been better if Fannon hadn't arrived as he did find a nick outside the offpeg of batsmen Wilks only to see a low chance put down by Fannon. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail clearly not a lesson the keeper has had to teach his pupils just yet. This early set back did not deter the Woodham bowlers though as early inroads were soon made. Older the first to strike finding the edge of the other Opener Howe and a good low catch taken at slip by Brown. Older was into his groove, however it was a rank long hop that brought the next wicket, Goodwin's eyes must have lit up at the delivery but he only managed to sky a catch to Ball at mid off. Not to be outdone against an opposition which brings out the best in him Preston got into the action, bowling fast and agressively he managed to push Walters back so much the batsman hit his own wicket. This brought about more quick wickets with Preston bowling both Hinds and Burton for single figures. This brought number 8 Sorrell to the wicket with opener Wilks still batting having survived that early scare. He was reprieved once more as Cook put down a skied shot off Preston before he fell to Older caught by Collis and mid off. Older hadn't finished yet as he picked up his 4th wicket with Fannon making amends catching Sorrell for 0. This ended a fine spell from the Woodham openers with combined figures of 20-7-34-7. Change bowler Collis was quickly into the wickets as he took the outside edge of Wilson with another catch taken by Brown at slip. This left OSSCC at 36-8 and a repeat of 2016's 53 all out looking likely. Unfortunately it was at this stage that Collis and Glasson decided to feed the rather leg sided Sutheran and Holdaway. Aided by some potentially foolish and stubborn field placings by the skipper who hoped his bowlers may find an off-side line so left the leg side relatively sparse of fielders this pair more than doubled the tally putting on a game high partnership of 42 before Collis finally stuck it outside off and Sutheran edged high in the air to Ball fielding at gully. Sensing run scoring was mainly up to her Holdaway continued to attack but was out soon after with Marshall taking an excellent low one handed catch on the run at mid wicket ending the OSSCC innings for 87.

After Tea openers Ball and Brown set about the target with Holdaway bowling some good out-swinging balls which had Brown either edging along the ground through slips or belting over the covers. Ball at the other end faced the inconsistent Sorrell. It was this inconsistency that paid dividends though as Ball edged a leg side delivery to the keeper to depart for 9 and end a steady partnership of 33. Glasson, next to the crease was in watchful mood as he and skipper Brown looked to see off the opening bowlers and have a look at what else the home team had to offer. Unfortunately this plan was brought to an abrupt halt was Brown was adjudged to have been trapped LBW by S. Older off the bowling of Sorrell. The Skipper was left to feel a little rueful of the decision as he was consoled by the opposing fielders for a "tough" decision against him. This wicket brought about a mini collapse that Woodham always seem capable off when chasing low scores and 40-1 at the fall of Brown soon became 58-5. This brought OSSCC into the game and their enthusiasm was evident but opening bowlers Sorrell and Holdaway had now bowled out. Glasson took this as his cue to open up however he fell victim to a good ball which caught him in two minds and was bowled for 7. Woodham now 65-6 and nerves were jangling for everyone. Everyone that is except for Preston who decided attack was the best form of defence and powerfully struck four 4's in his first 8 balls. This all but ended the contest allowing his partner Cook to hit the winning runs, with 4 needed Cook swept the ball just short of the boundary and proceeded to run the required amount.

A very good bowling and fielding display let down slightly by a middle order wobble but a win was secured. Next up Rainham arrive at the home of cricket and the Woodham team looking for 4 straight wins to send the skipper on his usual mid season sabbatical to Turkey in high spirits.
