Galleywood 2nd v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI on Sat 19 Aug 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 9 wkts
Match report
The Woodham Pups traveled to Galleywood with the distant sounds of V festival in the background. With the home team regular skipper and vice at fore mentioned festival it was left to stand in Singh to complete the toss. A Call of heads, another tail and another lost toss for the Woodham skipper however Singh's decision to bat first meant both captains got what they wanted anyway.
A pair of Older's opened the bowling once again with the younger older bowling well and was unlucky to beat the bat on many occasions. Opening batsmen P. Sturton and M. Singh made steady progress both getting themselves in. Change bowlers N. Cook and J. Preston were unable to break this partnership before drinks. the home team reaching this milestone for around 80 but crucially with wickets in hand. A change of plan needed and the skipper, after discussion with wannabe captain Costin brought in two mid on's to try to stem the flow of runs. This proved decisive as Sturton tried to force a ball which nipped back into the offside and was duly bowled. Finally with an end open the woodham bowlers started to make in roads as both Murray fell to S. Collis and the obdurate Singh finally succumbing to a straight ball by golden arm N. Hayman. However, after these quick wickets a partnership between S. Cato and G. Boxer soon developed and the score pushed past the 150 mark. A well taken catch by Collis as gully ended this late defiance. Batsmen came and went as Galleywood looked to push the score on finally finishing on 185 - 7 off their 45 overs. helped by 45 extras with an unbelievable 30 wides.
A great tea was taken with Woodham feeling this score was maybe below par. However with the chairMAN and hero of last week, I. Ball, unavailable due to a trip away with the family N. Costin opened the batting with the skipper A. Brown. This new opening partnership was to prove decisive. A good opening spell by M. Cockrell kept things tight however once the opening bowlers had been seen of the runs started to flow. N. Costin was the first to pass 50, quickly followed by a much streakier half century just before the drinks break for the skipper. Costin started to open up after the drinks break, tucking into a 2nd tea of sorts with some rather kind bowling by G. Whitelock, however, the change to spin was to prove the undoing of Costin, falling for a well compiled 75, Costin probably ruing his luck having seen his opening partner dropped at least 4 times throughout his innings and Costin falling at the first chance offered. An opening Partnership of 153 had however put Woodham in the driving seat. N. Richardson joined Brown at the crease and Brown took this as his signal to open up scoring 32 of the remaining 35 runs to be scored to bring up an unbeaten 100 due to a 4 off the last ball of the match.
Another all round bowling and batting performance secured a 3rd consecutive win for the Woodham 2's. The win means we have now won as many games as last year and are on course to finish with 5 wins out of 5 as we did last year. Next up OSSCC at home with the team hot on the heals of their hosts for 3rd place.
