Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Goresbrook 3rd on Sat 12 Aug 2017 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won By 5 wkts
Match report
The Woodham Pup's entertained Goresbrooks 3's looking to avenge an early season loss and cement 4th place in the table this week. The skipper won the toss and elected to field, much to the pleasure of the away skipper who wanted to bat first.
This pleasure was to be short lived however as the Older duet, opening the bowling for the first time together in the league, bowled well and kept things tight. The younger Older picked up the wickets of Opener Lewis and number 3 Parnell while obliterating George's beloved stumps in the meanwhile. First change bowlers S. Collis and k. (P). Mitchell continued the squeeze with the former picking up the wicket of Johnson after ChairMAN I. Ball managed to hold a magnificent one handed catch, made even better by his poor judgement of the flight of the ball. Drinks taken at 23 overs with the visitors 45-3. A Slow but steady partnership started to build between opener and captain Livett and the only other batsmen to make it out of single figures Walsh. This partnership was thankfully broken as the batsmen, looking to increase the run rate decided to take on the skipper fielding at cover, a clean pick up, throw inches above the stumps and Fannon collecting cleanly and running out Walsh bringing an end to a partnership of 55 and with it any hope Goresbrook had of setting a challenging score. G. Cook, having bowled well albeit with 2 expensive overs quickly picked up the new batsmen Wilkinson, caught N. Goode at short midwicket. P. Mitchell finally got in on the act with 2 wickets, including a sharp C&B chance and without much more drama the Goresbrook innings finished on 123-7 of their allotted 45 overs.
After a second Older tea of the season, this time hosted by the younger Older, the Woodham openers of I. Ball and A.Brown got the innings underway. Unfortunately the Skipper was the first to fall, dragging on a ball that would have missed a 2nd set up stumps off the bowling of the impressive Gillham. This early loss did not unsettle Ball who remained calm even after N. Richardson, P. Harness & D. Fannon all came and went falling to Gillham who finished with figures of 10-2-34-4. Ball also managed to see of the unfortunate N. Goode who managed a leading edge to be C&B by L. Walsh. This wicket however brought to the crease the hero for the 1's last week G. (Gavlar/Michelin) Cook. Cook remained Obstinate scoring slowly but blocking well allowing Ball to pick the runs off at the other end. This partnership managed to see the Pup's across the line, helped by returning opening bowler Barwick who bowled 5 no balls followed by 4 byes to finish the innings. Ball following his magnificent fielding display with a flawless 74* (Jug still owed) and Cook finishing with a turgid 10 giving the home team a score of 126-5 with a bonus batting point reached.
An all round outstanding bowling and fielding performance with many bowlers going for around 2 runs per over, coupled with a brilliant exhibition in batting from our chairMAN extraordinaire resulted in an important result against a close rival made. The result made even sweeter with fellow 4th place rivals Rayleigh losing to Wickham giving us a 24 point cushion. Next up Galleywood away, a win in the next fixture will pile pressure on the team in 3rd who are not guaranteed of that spot yet. A duplicate of last season run in (5 wins form 5) could make things interesting. 2 down, 3 to go.
