Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won By 7 wkts
Match report
The Woodham pups turned up to face a Rayleigh team who had moved above them in the table the week before with over half the team suffering from the exploits from the skippers party the night before. Unfortunately for these poor souls the skipper lost the toss and the team were put into the field.
G. Verlander and J. Preston opened the attack although the latter only lasted 1 over before his "back" aka hangover got the better of him and he was swiftly replaced by S. Older. Verlander and Older kept things very tight with Verlander also picking up 3 wickets, 1 from a fine ball that jagged back in off the seam to bowl opening batsmen S. Gosling for 4 while the other two wickets came from full tosses outside the off stump with the batsmen giving catching practice to P. Harness at extra cover. The combination of Verlander and Older made early innings run difficult with combined figures of 20 overs for 56 with 3 wickets. With J. Preston feeling better after watching the other bowlers bowling their 10 overs on the bounce and O. Glasson replacing Verlander at the other end runs started to flow more easily for the Rayleigh batsmen with good partnership being formed by Wright and firstly Bumpus and then T. Gosling. Wright was eventually dismissed by G. Cook who had replaced Glasson into the attack with Glasson taking the catch in the deep. this brought a flurry of wickets with T Catling falling to Cook with Harness taking his 3rd catch and the returning Glasson picking up Godfrey for a duck. The momentum was short lived though as Gosling and Mantell took the Rayleigh score past 200, eventually completing the innings on 215. This score was believed to be about par on the day but was probably about 30 more than the skipper wanted to give up with a mixture of poor ground fielding and luck for the batsmen meaning the run chase would be tougher than hoped.
After tea the opening pair of Ball and Brown took about the run chase with caution, opening bowlers Mantell and Patel kept things tight and Brown became the first casualty as he dragged on from a wide full toss, becoming the 3rd batsmen to fall to that specific delivery. This brought the form player N. Smith to the crease. Ball and Smith eased into the innings with Smith scoring freely while Ball played the steady hand. Ball was the next wicket to fall, bowled by another full toss for 34. Fannon joined Smith at the crease as the run rate started to climb, the partnership offering some hope until Smith suffered a tweak in his hamstring and with running difficult he was soon bowled for a well compiled 47. This wicket did however mean that Smith gained an average for the season of 189. The wicket of Smith brought the aggressive Glasson to the crease. Glasson and Fannon formed a match winning partnership, with both scoring freely Fannon was the first to bring up his half century, this was quickly followed by Glasson with the pairing both ending not out, Fannon 62 off 69 balls and the impressive Glasson 53 off just 39. This partnership saw Woodham home with 2 overs to spare.
This win took Woodham above their hosts in the table and meant the first double of the season was gained. Next week sees the visit of St Andrews to the home of cricket with the Woodham Pups looking to avenge their early season loss.
