Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Great Baddow 3 on Sat 03 Sep 2016 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts

Match report The final league game of the season v the div 8 champions Great Baddow, and it was a special game for 2 players.

After being asked to field, the bowlers set about their task, with both Jack and Sam taking early wickets. With the introduction of the 2 spinners Gavin Cook started take wickets. and didn't stop until he finished with a career best 6 for for 43 off 9.2. This is Gav's third 5 for and his second league one. But this eclipse's his performance v Danbury in August 2014 where he finished with 5 for 53. Baddow finishing on 194 all out off 39.2 overs leaving Woodham with 50 overs to bat and try and beat the rain and the champions.

Damo, and Nelly both fell cheaply and Beames with his bad back just tried to smash a straight one down the ground; and missing. Mickley supported well and Gav and ollie batted well, but the day goes to our captain Andy Brown.

After years of scoring 50's and 60's; being stranded on 97 and run out on 98, Browny achieved a personal milestone by hitting his maiden 100 off 136 balls. He anchored the innings despite the nervous nineties! Ollie and Gav were desperate not to score runs to give him the chance to reach 100. it was a bit of a wait as he missed 5 full tosses and and a long run of dots before waiting for the perfect ball. We were all a little bit worried that 4 byes might win the game leaving him stuck so close yet again.but with Gav expertly hitting a single to give him the strike once again following a run of 10 dots on 99, Browny took that final single to reach three figures and finishing 100 not out off 136.

Congratulations to Gav and Andy, and to everyone who has played for the seconds this year. Jack and Sam shared 43 wickets between thim, Nelly hit a lovely 100, and Damo got close with 93. A rebuilding year after relegation last year saw the seconds finish in 5th spot with 9 wins and 7 losses. A very credible performance for a young side. It was particularly good to see the 2 youngsters of the club Joel and Rib perform so well with the ball, sharing 20 wickets across 26 games.

With the possibility that the top 4 in the division could be promoted next season this leaves Woodham in a great position to have a crack at promotion next year.

Finally, as always thanks to Nathan for all his work in preparation of the ground so we have somewhere to play every week.

Roll on the indoor season!

regards

Mark Beames
