Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Goresbrook 2nd on Sat 30 Aug 2014 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs
Match report
The season ended with an entertaining contest as Champions Goresbrook visited Pheasant Park.
Winning the toss, the changed new ball pairing of Kev Wright and Craig Marshall enjoyed early success as the visitors soon found themselves 21-4. The champagne moments in the opening exchanges, the excellent one handed catch at slip from Ian Ball and forward diving catch from George Verlander to dismiss Bird and Punch, both without scoring. Golden arm Verlander was introduced into the attack and got a wicket with his first ball, with Josh Brady claiming a well judged catch once the ball had returned back into the earths atmosphere.
Visiting skipper Ivey survived what looked a very adjacent lbw shout when on 0 - and together with Livett, sought about a rebuilding job from a precarious position of 38-5. The pair batted well and both passed 50. They had produced a partnership of 109 when Ivey holed out to Marshall in the deep, a first wicket for Ollie Glasson. Glasson bowled well at the death and picked up a second wicket, a first stumping for Brady who kept impeccably throughout, despite having jetted in from New York just hours earlier. Marshall grabbed his second wicket of the day, which took him to the top of the wicket taking standings in the 1's - an excellent return for the seasons efforts.
Livett remained the immovable object, remaining unbeaten on 61, as the Champions closed on 172-8.
The chase started with a splutter, as a jet lagged Brady missed a straight one from Williams to depart without score. Rod Brazier and Ian Ball generated another 50 partnership in recovery, until Rod had reached 47 and misjudged a risky single, the bails removed with him short of his ground. As is the Woodham way this season, one wicket brings two, and with the score still on 69, Ball departed, lbw to Smith for 19.
Stephen Richardson and Neil Smith stabilised the reply, as WMCC ate away at the 173 target. Just when they had started to look comfortable, Nelly was bowled by his namesake for 21. No doubt pining for his partner, Richardson fell the very next ball, holing out in the deep for 27. 117-3 became 117-5 in a flash. 56 required from 54 balls.
For the second time, two new batsman found themselves at the crease, but both Neil Friend and Ashley Wade stuck to the task in hand, scoring quickly, as they generated a run a ball partnership of 30 to edge WMCC closer to their target. It was unfortunate that both fell in short succession to the spin of Walsh, leaving 23 needed from 12 balls.
Despite best endeavours, only 15 of the 23 were scored from the final 12, with the chase finishing a creditable, but tantalisingly close 7 runs short of the Goresbrook total.
A good performance against worthy league winners to end the season, which ultimately ended in a mid-table return to Division Four. Nevertheless, with many changes made to the team for the 2014 campaign, there are plenty of highlights to look back upon, and plenty of reasons to be optimistic of challenging toward the top of the table this time next year.
