Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v High Easter on Sat 12 Jul 2014 at 1.30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 17 runs
Match report
The 1's continued their ascent up the league table with a hard fought victory over visitors High Easter.
After a lot of overnight and morning rain, the wicket contained a bit of moisture, but skipper Wright won the toss and elected to bat.
On a tricky surface, and good opening bowling spells by Spalding and Bentley, runs were difficult to come by. Bentley accounted for Josh Brady without scoring, but gradually Rod Brazier and Ian Ball, continuing their good form started to find the ropes and runs started to flow. Rod couldn't quite emulate his 100 from the previous week, but had grafted his way to 37 when Moss trapped him in front. The partnership of 88, achieved over 27 testing overs was an invaluable one.
Ball continued on to record his second 50 in succession, but between overs 30 and 35, the home side moved dangerously from 100-2 to 111-5. A timely counter attack from Kev Wright, mixing big hits with a slice or two of luck started to push WMCC towards a much more defendable score. A partnership of 32 in 5 overs between Wright and Connor Hayman propelled the score beyond 160, and by the time Wright had reached his 50, the scoreboard had a much healthier look, finishing 182-9.
After an extended break for the sumptuous tea banquet, (a labour of love from Karen Brady which was hugely enjoyed) the High Easter reply was dealt a double blow, as Hayman removed both openers, as both he and the ever economical Tom Payne restricted scoring opportunities. By the time Payne removed Chester, the visitors were in trouble, 18-3 from 10 overs. Skipper Norgrove remained calm and in partnership with Chinnery, High Easter began to claw their way back into the game. The pair put on 50 until a cool head from George Verlander caught Chinnery off the bowling of Craig Marshall.
Spalding announced his arrival to the crease with a booming boundary, but Brazier expertly capitalised on some casual backing up, throwing down the stumps. A game changer. Bentley threw the bat from ball one and had fired a quick 21, until Brazier took a skier, another wicket for Marshall as the target began to look an increasingly difficult challenge to achieve.
Nevertheless, with Norgrove at the crease, the target was not beyond reach. He moved to a deserved 50, until finally, Marshall removed the visiting skipper and in doing so, tipped the game firmly back in WMCC's favour.
Hayman picked up a third wicket, well caught behind by Brady, and Marshall earnt a fourth. With 18 needed from the final ball, the field was brought in, a decision that paid off as Wright bowled Garner to claim the 10th wicket and with it, another point. A win by 17 runs.
An excellent team performance in a tough encounter on a tricky surface following the earlier rain. A key win under pressure and good to see cool heads kept by all when the game was in the balance. The victory has pushed the team into 2nd, and will hope to consolidate that position when entertaining Willow Herbs at Pheasant Park next Saturday.
