Match report Another Div 3 game, and yet again, despite playing a team in a lofty position in the league, another tight match ensued, this even closer than in recent weeks, as it ended with a one wicket defeat.

Losing the toss again, WMCC were asked to bat and opening bowlers Arain & Powell kept a tight rein on run scoring, both bowling their allotted 12 overs in one spell conceding just 52 runs between them. Brown & Brazier battled well, their partnership yielding 56 before both fell for 21 & 29 respectively. When last weeks stand out pair Richardson & Biggs were both dismissed for 10 the visitors were left struggling on 93-5 from 34. An excellent display of counter attacking from Kettley (26) & Friend (15), generated a stand of 42, which helped to push the total up to a small, but potentially challenging 150-9.

The home side's inference that the total was 100 short looked well founded as 25 runs flowed from the first 3 overs. Howarth & Aslam both played on but the home side continued to make progress to victory. Yet when the third wicket fell on 100, Richardson making a fine catch in the deep, the game was turned on its head by an excellent fightback. Hayman returned to remove Southwell, opener Frost & I. Hartley, aided by a brilliant one handed catch by Biggs to reduce Springfield to 127-6. Further wickets followed, and the home side were left teetering on the brink at 139-9. Pollinger came in at 11, though had been relegated to the bottom of the order due to injury and it was he & Hartley, despite surviving a difficult dropped catch that would have won WMCC the game, nudged Springfield over the line, just.

An enthralling tight game, with another top side in the league being made to work hard all the way to achieve a victory. Whilst the defeat, coupled with the success of Galleywood at Eastwood makes the relegation fight closer, the standard of performance is good enough to banish those worries as we enter the final month in the season.
