Match report At first glance at the match summary, it looks a familiar tale of the season so far. A decent bowling display, but ultimately an underlying batting frailty unable to capitalise on the work in the field. Whilst some of that rings true, it does not tell the whole story.

Visitors and league leaders Springfield, buoyed by their flying start to the season, won the toss and elected to bat. The first six overs were quite remarkable. Connor Hayman and Tom Payne ripped out the top order and staggeringly, with half a dozen overs gone, the scoreboard had a surreal look to it. Latecomers would have assumed that the visitors were still getting to grips with the new WMCC scoreboard, but it really was 5-5 from 6 overs. 22-6, 45-7, Springfield gradually recovered. Had the chances that were presented been taken, a score of 75 would have been some achievement. However, increased application, some lusty hitting from the tail and a couple of dropped chances helped to propel the score to 161 all out, a score that would have been taken by WMCC before the start of the game, but not given the first few overs.

Whilst the reply did not begin in such dramatic style, the run chase struggled to get going and things did not look rosy at 17-3 with a run rate little over one. A recovery was gradual, but wickets continued to fall and the run rate continued to climb. Only when Wright (25) & Fannon (16) were at the crease was any significant partnership formed, and their stand of 35 was the only one that exceeded 17. Josh Brady again displayed composure and sound technique but the ask was too much.

A defeat, but many positives to be taken against a side that had barely dropped a point so far, who did well to rescue their innings from such a perilous position. They certainly knew they had been in a game. With players returning to bolster the batting line up, a win, and hopefully run of wins, are not far away.
