Brading CC v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club TOUR XI on Sat 08 Sep 2012 at 1:00pm
Match was Drawn
Match report
After a rather disappointing 2020 match the evening before the wounded Woodies Team took to the field against Brading CC looking to get the Tour back on track.
The skipper losing his second toss in a row meant Woodies were to take to the field on a wicket that looked like it offered something for all.
Immediately, the Woodies team looked like they meant business in the field with a tight opening bowling partnership from Roger Marshall (1-17-10) and Liam Watts (0-8-6) and a fielding display that showed no signs of the beer consumed the evening before. The excellent bowling continued with the change bowlers of Keith Mitchell (2-37-13) and Craig Marshall (2-34-10) ensuring that despite a battling 36 off 119 balls from the Brading opener, S Mandley and a decent knock of 41 from the L Hailes the Woodies restricted any real acceleration of the score that meant the Brading side scored what appeared to be a modest total of 136 for 8. Despite the Woodies team dropping numerous catches the bowling and fielding displays were top notch throughout the innings and the Woodies team were buoyant going into Tea. Nobody showed more buoyancy than our Twelfth man for the day Mr Andrew Brown who had quietly proceeded to be well on his way in trying to smash the bar takings record. (well ok perhaps not that quietly!!)
After a lovely tea the woodies P Kettley and S Richardson took to the field in pursuit of a gettable total of 137. From early in the innings it appeared that the total was not going to be easy and this was evidenced by the early loss of both openers for single figure scores and Mark Beames for a duck, left the woodies on 28-3 from 9overs and in desperate need of a partnership. Liam Watts and Roger Marshall knew that was required and did a good job in putting on a partnership of 30, but once these guys fell (20 and 21 respectively) the pace taken off the ball by Brading, the rate was creeping up. The Woodies were left with a dilemma of either going for the win or shutting up shop. and with the required rate in excess of 10 an over and with only one wicket remaining, Keith Mitchell had decided to park the bus, Manoj Tripathi had other ideas and had decided to have a couple of nervous swipes but in the end the Woodies survived and the game was drawn. Keith and Manoj left the field to a jubilant ovation from the rest of the Woodies team.
I would like to thank Brading Cricket Club for an excellent game of cricket and an extremely good laugh in the club house after the game and although the game was a draw the Woodies took the WKD drinking title back to Essex, courtesy of Roger Marshall.
Man of the Match: Manoj Tripathi 3 catches and a stumping.
Notes: Reddin captain, Tripathi wicket keeper (8 byes) , Timed match.
