Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Havering-atte-Bower 1st on Sat 26 May 2012 at 13:30
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 4 wkts
Match report
Finally, the 1st XI season for 2012 got underway with the visit of Havering-Atte-Bower to Pheasant Park. On a baking hot day, with the ground looking in tremendous shape thanks to the continous sterling efforts of Sir Don Carver, new skipper Wright won the toss and elected to bowl, prefering to chase with the opposition, who had just missed out on promotion to Division Two last season, something of an unknown quantity.
Wright & Tom Payne opened the attack, with Wright striking early to remove Jackson, with Hirst taking a good catch a first slip, setting the tone for an outstanding fielding display by the home side, proving the old adage that catches do really win matches. With Beechey going well at one end, runs started to flow, but two wickets in an over from Wright, the second a fantastic (c) S. Collis - diving catch from Payne, deployed at fly-slip helped to reduce the visitors to 40-3.
Cometh the drinks break, essential after 15 overs, Wright & Payne made way for the Mayor of London, fresh from his recent re-election and Hayman. Between them they managed to further swing the game in the balance of the Woodies, restricting scoring opportunities and limiting the chances that Beechey had to continue to accelerate.
Beechey was playing particularly well, hitting the ball hard & dispatching the odd bad ball to the boundary, a class apart from the other batsman in the Havering side. Hayman was the man to remove the dangerous Havering no 3 - clean bowling him for 43. Hayman also removed Hurley, aided by a stunning low one handed catch from 'keeper Andreas Smythe, proving that the burden of playing football in the morning and on tea duty had not dulled his powers. When Hayman also removed Keylock, bowled for 6, Havering had stumbled to 82-6, Hayman returning impressive figures of 7-0-15-3.
Another fantastic low catch from Smith gave TP his wicket that endeavours had derserved and Boris Johnson finally picked up the wickets that he had earnt, two further catches, one sharp slip catch from Hirst, and the other in the deep by John Marshall, on his league debut for WMCC. Marshall was the last to join the wicket action - taking just one ball to make an impact, clean bowling Chinnery and to end the Havering innings on 111 - a superb effort in the hot conditions.
New opening pairing of J. Marshall & Brown set about the target, in the face of a quality bowling attack, easily the best we have faced in the last three seasons. A steady opening stand of 24 was ended when a slower ball from Mitcheson decived Marshall - returning to the pavillion for 6. Brown and Hirst dug in and continued to frustrate the visiting bowlers, taking the score past 50, before Micheson struck again, Brown caught behind for 7. Eddie extra was in tremendous form and this prolific player had a telling impact on the match - helping to ease the pressure built up by the excellent Mitcheson, who removed Richardson (2) and Wright (7), either side of a lack of coherent communication between Mockney Hirst and Thespian Smith resulted with the latter being run out for 4. Woodies 82-5. The arrival of Roger Marshall, who passed a late fitness test/manned up enough (delete as applicable) of an ankle injury to play, helped to push the home side further towards the finishing line, and trying to hit the winning runs, was bowled for 16 just 3 runs short.
It mattered not, as Andy Smith dusted off the golf clubs, and hit a couple of lofted shots to take WMCC to victory. Hirst (21 no) remained the unmoveable object at the other end, helping to earn the home side 25 points.
An excellent win against a side who just missed out on promotion last season, and will surely be one of the teams to beat throughout the 2012 season. Next stop, South Woodham Ferrers.
