Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Rayleigh Fairview 2nd on Sat 01 Jun 2019 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won By 98 runs

Match report On a lovely hot day Woodham 2nds hosted for the second week in a row this week was Rettendon and Rayleigh Fairview 4th.

With the heat and a dry wicket after winning the toss the home skipper decided to bat first hoping for a better start than last week. Unfortunately we lost the first wicket before the end of the first over with Fannon dragging on to the 5th ball by the end of the 3rd over both openers were gone. This bought Beames to the crease who started well and got the score board moving but the partnership with Ball was ended the score now 22 for 3 after 8 overs what was needed was somebody at number five to stick around luckily we have Tom Payne to do just that. For the next 5 overs both Tom and Mark were knocking the ball around with ease until Mark was bowled to become Ashby's 3rd victim 45 for 4 became 50 for 5 that became 67 for 6 which then became 76 for 7 and Woodham were now in real trouble but with Payne still there and last weeks hero with the bat Sam Older at the crease hope was not lost. The pair managed to put on 47 for the 8th wicket before Tom was bowled for a well made 57 an excellent and much needed innings and with the last two wickets adding a further 50 runs as the visitors began to wilt in the heat with the tail wagging again 97 runs for the last three wickets Woodham not only managed to put a defendable total of 173 on the board also frustrated the opposition by taking them into the 45th over.

After a fine Mickley tea it was now the home sides turn to bowl and it couldn't of started better with Sam Older bowling opener worship with the first ball of the innings and with Sam Norman removing the other opener with his first ball Woodham were starting to look like favourites. The two Sams continued where they had left off the week before giving very little away and creating pressure with Older picking up another before drinks Sam Norman deserved more than his one wicket but after 7 excellent overs in the heat the skipper decided to try some spin straight after drinks. After a couple of exploratory overs the wickets began to tumble with Webster the next to go well caught by Beames at mid off for his second of three catches. With Hayman now taking over from Older the rest of the opposition were either blown away by pace one end or done by the spin the other with Hayman picking up 2 for 7 and Cook 4 for 15 and that was that 75 all out inside 24 overs.

Another case of digging in with the bat to get a score and the bowlers blowing the opposition away.

A great effort Boys!!
