Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 9 wkts
Match report
On what seemed to be a winter's day Woodham twos had a trip to Oak Meadow Rayne. After driving though a hail storm on the way there, unsurprisingly the pitch and out field were a bit damp and with more showers forecast the toss would become vital. With the visitors winning the toss the hosts were invited to have a bat.
The two Sams opened the bowling with great effect! Sam Older getting the first wicket in just his second over with the score on 4. A mere ten balls later we were all back in the shed as the hail returned. After a 40 minute delay and reduction of overs it was now a 38 over aside game. The two Sams continued where they left off. Sam Norman getting the Rayne captain caught behind to the second of Costin 4 victims. Both Sams bowled an excellent first 20 overs claiming 2 wickets each and only 45 runs conceded. The change bowling from Steve Flash Collis and Tom Payne was just as tight. Toms 6 overs only costing 8 runs and Steve bowling 4 maidens in his 9 picking up 2 wickets. So after 32 overs Rayne were 64 for 6 the introduction of Jon Clarke made it 65 for 7 and Rayne needed something from their number 4 Farr who had been extremely patient up to this point. With 4 overs to go Farr decided it was now that he would play some shots hitting the tree with ease and bringing up his 50. A direct hit run out from Sam Older in the 37th and a very good last over from Jon, Rayne finished on 105 for 8 an excellent bowling and fielding effort.
With a small target but tricky pitch after a sausage and chip tea it was Ball and Fannon to open the batting. The pair looked solid knocking the ball around with ease 38 without loss after 10 with a couple of lovely straight drives for 4 from Fannon. The pair continued to play and looked increasingly comfortable until the 19th over when a short ball from Spurling climbed steeply attempting a pull shot Fannon could only top edge the ball straight up and after a juggle the keeper held on, a well made run a ball 40 and solid opening stand of 71. Next in was the now big hitting Mickley with clearly somewhere to be he smashed 4 4s to finish 23 not out in just 11 balls.
So with 15.2 overs to spare and 9 wickets in hand a solid start from Ball and Fannon followed by a cameo from Mickley Woodham ended up with a comfortable win.
An excellent start to the season, more of the same next week please.
