Little Bardfield Village v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club INDOOR BDICL 1ST SIX on Sun 07 Dec 2014 at 5:30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 1 wkt

Match report Door number seven behind the advent calendar proved an omen, as beyond the chocolate delight was a cracker - something that the 1's and Little Bardfield Village contest proved to be.

In front of a packed house, containing a large WMCC contingent, LBV won the toss and elected to bat, despite only playing 5 batsmen.

That decision looked to have backfired spectacularly as three wickets fell in the first three overs. A return catch for Gavin Cook second ball of the innings, Kev Wright benefitting by the sure hands of Cook in over 2, and dead eye Rod Brazier running out dangerman Hymas in over 3 - LBV 11-3.

LBV's Cook took matters into his own hands and counter-attacked well, playing that family teatime favourite s*** or bust. He rode his luck, but managed to find the back wall on numerous occasions, and between him and Graham, the innings stabilised. Thankfully, Cook tried one hit too many, Mark Beames taking a smart low catch to earn Brazier his first wicket. The following over Rod took his direct hit tally to two - Graham well short of his ground, the innings closing on 69, from just 8.1 overs. It must be noted that there was only 1 extra in the whole innings - which can make such a crucial difference at this level.

Chasing 70 - from 12 overs - that should be easy, right? Not so - as the 1's ensured that the crowd were kept on the edge of their seats throughout.

A steady start from the regular Friday night pairing of Damo Fannnon and Mark Beames was halted on 16, Beames caught sharply at gully. Bowling continued to be tight, and it became evident that getting over the line would not be an easy task.

There was light at the end of the tunnel as fourth bowler Stone was obviously the weaker bowler to target. Typically, despite going for 13 off his first over, he also managed to claim the wicket of Fannon (8). When Cook and Brazier, both fell for 7 apiece, the reply had stuttered to 39-4. Recovery was made, but when Chairman Mitchell became the third man to be dismissed for 7, sending Len Goodman into a frenzy at the BBC Studios, one over remained, with 5 to win.

Thankfully, Stone was left to bowl the final over and bowled the third ball short of the mat, enabling the skipper to help himself to a back wall hit for six to win the game. Just.

Up and running at the fourth attempt - and tremendous to get a victory on the board - but can we do it the easy way next time?!
