Match report Start the car - the WMCC 1's have followed in the footsteps of the 2's by making it to BDICL finals day. Cue the mascot derby, Bumble, The Sugarbabes, fireworks et al. Ok, the additional glamour may be missing in Braintree come the first weekend in April, but for the first time ever, both trophies will have WMCC teams in the final four contesting for the respective coveted prizes.

In truth, a two wicket victory did not reflect the superiority that the 1's had demonstrated for much of the game against Rayne. Inserting their Div 2 opponents, runs were hard to come by. Supported again by some excellent catching, WMCC bowlers squeezed Rayne throughout, yielding just 73 runs in the 12 overs, with a brace of wickets for Kev Wright & Connor Hayman, and another for Rod Brazier, ably supported by chairman Mitchell.

With Eddie Extra coming to the party, the run chase began swiftly, 38 from the first three overs. The reliable Ian Ball the only casualty, as he was adjudged lbw for 10. Undeterred by this dismissal, the runs kept flowing, with Brazier showing surgical precision in threading a six between the copious light fittings and the ceiling roof. However, just when it seemed that the game would be over in quick time, WMCC ensured that the massed ranks in the gallery would get more value for their match ticket by letting Rayne back into the game as Brazier (17), Hayman (0) and Mark Beames (18) all fell foul of back wall death or glory.

The wise head of Mitchell steadied the ship (though not reflected in his score which I'm sure was more than 2 that the scorers gave him - obviously startled by his coolness under pressure). Wright brought the game to a close with a six, victory gained with a further four and a half overs remaining, ending any lingering doubts that the job would not be seen through.

So it is off to the semi's we go, to do battle with Witham, a mighty challenge. The gallery should be packed with WMCC players, supporters, 4 & 6's cards, giant foam fingers, the lot. That fun will take place on the afternoon of Sun April 6 - tickets available soon!
