Braintree Youth v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club INDOOR BDICL 1ST SIX on Sun 26 Jan 2014 at 6:30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs

Match report Whilst the latest match for the 1's in BDICL Div One ultimately reads as a defeat, the game, against perennial league winners Braintree Youth was for large parts a closely fought contest as the Woodies 1's sought to defeat Youth for the first time.

Fielding first, an excellent bowling and fielding display kept the brake on Braintree throughout - and with the exception of the ever reliable Hale, none of the batsman were allowed to get away and dominate as has been the case in previous clashes. Usual bowlers Wright & Mitchell toiled away to good effect, but the contributions from Chris Collis & Andy Smith, in his first game of the season were key in frustrating the oppposition.

Clinging onto catches, difficult or otherwise is also an integral element of a good fielding display. All four chances on offer were taken, a juggling catch from Mark Beames and a couple of claims from the back and side wall for skipper Wright, but neither were in the same league as the brilliant caught and bowled effort from Chris Collis, who clung onto a drive in his follow through. The umpire remarked that it was a 'catch it or be impaled' situation which shows just how hard the ball was struck and just how close to the face it was. Stunning catch.

Bouyed by the fielding display, WMCC set about their target. Boasting the leagues leading run scorer in Ian Ball, he, together with Beames put on 28 in the first 3 overs, right up with the rate. Gradually, however, the experience and skill of 'Youth held sway, removing both openers and squeezing the run rate far below the 9 and a bit required, as they finally took control of the game for the first time.

The run chase stalled, and eventually ended 32 short, on 79, just three wickets down.

In summary, an excellent performance, full of skill and endeavour and a game that Braintree had to battle to win, all which bodes well for the remainder of the indoor league campaign. The league will take a back seat for a week, as old favourites Terling are next up for the 1's in the cup.
