Witham v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club INDOOR BDICL 1ST SIX on Sun 15 Dec 2013 at 6:30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 91 runs

Match report Sometimes in life, things just aren’t meant to be. Victory against Witham in the latest BDICL Div 1 match provided first hand evidence of that statement, as the 1’s went down to a 91 run defeat at the hands of the team one place above in the table.

In a match that resembled a current Ashes fixture, Witham took the role of Australia and attacked from the off. Their positive intent was rewarded by hitting several maximums, plundering back wall boundaries almost at will. Some fortune was had along the way, but when you chance your arm that often, that is always likely to occur.

Some brief respite was achieved with the dismissals of Wakelin, Rogers and Sambrook, but with such a good foundation, Bellehewe, McKendry and the returning Green could continue attacking freely. Once the alloted 12 overs had been completed, Witham had amassed a daunting 168-3.

They say there is more than one way to skin a cat, but faced with such a challenging total, attacking from the off was the only option. Opening bowling pair Wakelin & Bellehewe bowled well and made achieving the 14 an over required run rate difficult. Problems increased with the run out of Mr Reliable, Ian Ball for 9. Both Rod Brazier (0) & Connor Hayman (4) came and went seeking to up the scoring rate. Whilst some respectability was gained in the partnership between Mark Beames (22) and Kev Wright (22) the final two dismissals of Wright (caught off a double ricochet between ceiling and light) and Keith Mitchell (run out via a direct hit with the ball going through his legs as he attempted to make his ground) summed up what had been one of those evenings.

Nothing to get too despondent about - but when fortune isn't with you and your opponents play well it is difficult.

Nevertheless as we enter the festive break, a creditable 3 wins from 8 have been achieved, (not to mention the very close run thing with Champions Coggeshall) which demonstrates that we can compete at this level. We hope to continue to prove that point when the remaining 6 games commence in January.

Happy Christmas All!
