East Bergholt v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sun 06 May 2018 at 11.00am
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 89 runs

Match report The 'road to Lords' ended at the first hurdle as the 10 men of Woodham suffered defeat at the hands of Two Counties opponents, East Bergholt, to bow out of the National Village Cup.

On a warm Sunday morning, winning the toss and electing to bat, East Bergholt openers Foster and Foster produced a good opening stand that took the hosts to 60 from the first 10 overs, despite new ball pairing Wright and Pateman beating the bat on numerous occasions, with the latter creating a couple of takeable chances. Nevertheless, the visitors hung in the game and the change of tack to pace off worked well as gradually Woodies worked their way back into the match. Dan Smith the first to strike, inducing an edge behind from A. Foster (32) - a well taken catch by Nigel Costin behind the sticks. Gav Cook joined in to account for S. Foster (55) and the spin pairing continued to toil away well, Dan (2-27) and Gav (2-34) giving the visitors a foothold into the game - well backed up by good ground fielding.

A cameo from the third Foster (36no) in the Bergholt line up helped to take the total to 150 and beyond but a good spell from Pete Harness (2-36) and an economical burst from Manoj Tripathi (0-16) kept the hosts under 200 - 193-8 at the close, an excellent effort from WMCC without a full complement in the sizeable outfield.

The reply started in style as Dave Glasson crashed one off his legs to the mid-wicket fence, but was first to fall balls later trying to engineer a fast start, caught at cover. Toby & Dan put together a good partnership as the Woodham innings progressed well. The pair scored freely and looked in little danger with pace on the ball. A change of bowling and pace was pivotal, as Philpot entered the fray with a decisive hand to play. He removed both set batsman, Toby (15), Dan (22) before going onto collect an impressive 4-18 from his alloted 7 overs.

From a positive position, scoring became more tricky, and with little pace and bounce to work with wickets regularly fell. Shortly after three figures were passed, Hunter bowled Wright to end the match and with it Woodies participation in this years competition.

Thanks to East Bergholt for their flexibility at staging this match at the third time of asking and Mark for all his endeavours in making it so.

A shame not to have progressed any further in the competition, but thanks to those 10 good men and true that gave it a good go - and on another day, you just never know..
