Match report The 1’s returned to action for the first time in the New Year with a tough assignment against Braintree. Following the pre-season merger between perennial champions Braintree Youth and Braintree, a ‘super power’ in the BDICL was born –and every bit as joyous to play against.

The kryptonite was early wickets. Inserted into the field, Gavin Cook duly obliged, bamboozling opener Celiz to get a leading edge for a simple catch to Wright, 9-1.

However, from this point on, it was less kryptonite, more Krypton Factor, such were the skills required to scale the back wall to which Braintree targeted, with great success throughout the innings.

D. Hale, Ledgerton and Sherry each reached 25 and retired. With wickets in hand, acceleration in the second half of the innings was rapid. Despite being briefly checked by a Mark Beames/Ollie Glasson combo, it continued to rain sixes, though mercifully, AB Villiers was not in the Braintree line up.

A late wicket for Wright yielded a third dismissal – enabling WMCC to continue to lead the league table for wickets taken in the top division – but Braintree ended their innings on a whopping 169-3.

It would have taken some effort to win the game from this position. Ian Ball and Mark Beames produced a 50 partnership, their first of the season, though generally tight bowling ensured that this milestone was reached in over 8.

Despite a generous contribution by Eddie Extra, a flurry of wickets extinguished the small flame of hope. Chairman Mitchell and skipper Wright played out the remaining overs to remain undefeated, the reply finishing somewhat short of the target, on 95-4.

A hugely tough game to return to, but league action will be put to one side as the road to er, Braintree, will commence on Feb 1, with a cup clash against old friends Boreham.
