Match report
Tis the season to be jolly....
The final game of indoor action before the mini winter break saw the 1’s tackle bottom of the table Rayne, who included more than a sprinkling of ex- Bocking players.
Inspired by England’s recent tour of Sri Lanka, the WMCC selectors again plumped for a bowling attack comprising a trio of spinners, with the twirling Fannon waiting in the wings should the front line attack not perform.
Losing the toss and asked to bat first, Rayne started well, with Whiteside and Stevens sharing an untroubled opening stand of 46 – until a direct hit from Wright sent Stevens back to the changing room for 19. Not that the wicket stemmed the flow of runs, as new man McIntyre joined Whiteside. With seven overs gone, the score had moved to 92-1.
The game changed once both batsmen retired. Following the wicket of May - success for Ollie Glasson - the run rate reduced significantly when nos 5 and 6 were at the crease.
A stand-off ensued, with both batsman struggling to get bat and ball and when they did, fine and canny fielding ensured that the retirees could not return to finish what they had started. The skipper went against his own instruction by bowling Walton in the final over – but operation recovery had been successfully deployed, Rayne finishing on 129-3 – yielding just 37 runs from their final 5 overs.
Onto the run chase. The contrasting styles of Ian Ball and Damo Fannon blended perfectly to get the run rate on track from the off. Deft side wall play from Ball (ok, there was one six) and a typical swashbuckling innings from Fannon took the score to 40-0 inside 4 overs. Two successive sixes brought up Damo’s retirement in over 4. The baton was handed to Ollie, who tried to continue in the same vein, but instead unfortunately fell first ball.
Wright was able to continue the momentum that Damo generated, clubbing a swift 25 and retiring. Ball soon joined the growing membership in retirement corner - WMCC firmly in the driving seat.
Gav Cook continued the onslaught, with a quickfire 17 before going for one big hit too many. Despite the run out of Mitchell (3) and the dismissal of the returning Fannon (27), Wright (43*) and Ball (28*) returned to finish the job off. A fifth six for the skipper took the team to victory with 7 balls to spare.
A second win on the spin, which moves the 1’s out of any relegation zone (should one exist this season!). Reward again for a consistent display of performances despite the truncated nature of this indoor season.
We shall reconvene again in January – but first some festive cheer to be enjoyed.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!
